The Leafs odds of making the playoffs are now down to 32.1%.  It would be the definition of insanity to expect the Leafs to lose this one, continue on the same path, and expect a change.  A new coach, a new inspiration, new respect might change their present course.

A few weeks ago, I would have agreed with you, but, now, I'm not so sure. The tone has changed and, now, the media seem to have started their assault on the coach. The whole "Nonis won't make a move in-season" is starting to sound more and more like the dreaded vote of confidence.

Until that takes place, I don't see it happening this season either. Nonis promised patience when he took over this club, and he's done nothing to make me think anything has changed in that regard.

When has a coach being sacked ever come back to bite a team - ever? But casting a player away, that can hurt and haunt a team for years.

that's not true. I had no ongoing issues with Quinn or Burns. Even Maurice was ok. I could take or leave Wilson.

But Carlyle is approaching Tom Watt levels of ineptness with me.

Actually - complete side note - you know what shocks me - I just looked up # of games coached since 1977, Wilson has the 2nd most games as coach behind Quinn. I didn't realize he was here that long.

Carlyle's just repeating Wilson's mistake: trying to force a style of play onto a team that it's not built for. Wilson tried to get a limited talented roster to play a more open game - which backfired because he didn't have the talent or the skaters. Carlyle's trying to turn one of the better skating teams in the NHL into a grinding team that collapses automatically in defensive situations. This team is a rush team - for better or for worse. They don't have the size or the defensive acumen to grind and sit back. They have the goaltending and the skaters to trade chances. It's not ideal, but they'd have more success I'm sure. At least they could use their skating to get more offensive chances instead of letting teams bludgeon their goaltenders into submission.

Also, didn't you rock the PAQ tag way back in the day? My memory might be off, that was a long long time ago.

Possibly. But when we want him gone, it's more in a "fired and replaced by a coach with a different approach to the team", not really in a "let's immolate him" way.

Yeah. I don't wish any physical harm upon him. He seems like a perfectly nice guy. I just don't want him coaching the Leafs.

What was wrong with Burns and Quinn? Wilson really wasn't as bad in retrospect with the talent he was given. Jonas "the hammer" Frogren, for example.

Should switch the coaches for the time they were here.  Although I think Wilson could have had the Devil's mid-90s trap and still have been screwed by Toskala.

You can pretty much say that about any team that isn't contending for a championship. Coaches generally have a shelf life. For some, it's longer than other.

I wish RC's shelf life lasted about as long as the shelf I made for my mother in Woodworking Grade 7.

Dreger's stance on the issue is softening, which leads me to believe the same is true of Nonis. I have no doubt he's now starting to seriously consider the possibility of making this move in-season. That wasn't true last week.

We all thought the same thing about Burke in the weeks leading up to Wilson being fired. No one really thought he'd actually fire him until after the season (if at all), and well, we all know how that played out. It's not so much wishful thinking as much as it's a comfortable amount of knowledge with how similar situations have played out in the past. If the Leafs don't turn it around soon, I don't see Carlyle lasting the season.
