Leafs looking at Josh Gorges

Oh and I would offer Franson for Matt Martin and the rights to Dan Boyle

Why spend anything to get the rights to someone who  is going to be a free agent in less than 24 hours.

Especially when the NHL changed the rules and you can talk to players about "feels" and "vague numbers" in the week leading up to July 1st.  The only advantage that trading for someone right before July 1st gives you is the ability to actually offer a contract and if I'm a free agent, unless the team I want to sign with is the one making that trade there really isn't any incentive to do that.

Just heard them talking about him on 590am, and that Kadri could be the roster player going back to The Habs. No way he's not worth Kadri ?

I sure wouldn't like that trade. But, it seems inevitable that Kadri is leaving town, if you want to believe the rumours. He's in every trade rumour, why? I just don't get it.

Trading Kadri might make sense if they have a deal for a number 1C in place.

Sure, if it's Stastny, but I doubt it.

Word out of Montreal is Georges has declined to waive his NTC...

edit: this was apparently on TSN radio Montreal, but can't find it in writing anywhere...

edit2: from BMac: Josh Gorges situation in MTL problematic for all. MTL had deal with TOR but Gorges refused to waive modified NTC to go to TOR. Still won't.

There is no explanation why he has always been treated the way that he has by Toronto.  Don Cherry used to talk about this when Nazem bounced up and down from the AHL and perform well here only to be sent down again.
I think he has had a raw deal in many respects and he probably would not shed a tear by leaving.

But Gorges is:

McKenzie reported on Monday afternoon that Gorges would not allow a deal with the Leafs - one of 15 teams on his no-trade list. McKenzie added over the weekend that none of the six other Canadian teams are on his list of permissible trade destinations, but Gorges told Stubbs on Monday that he's expanded the list to include a couple of Canadian teams.

"This is really hard to accept," Gorges added to both Montreal papers. "I have always given my heart to this team."

Nonis should pat himself on the back for having such a great organization that guys have absolutely no interest in playing here.  I think that's worth extending a few coaching/management contracts.

I don't buy that.

Yeah. I don't think that's a Nonis thing, either. Gorges didn't want to play for any of the Canadian teams, which, to me, signals that he doesn't want to play is a city with serious media attention. Some guys just don't want to play in Toronto because of all the external stuff.

There are also tax implications to playing in Canada as well.

@Dave_Stubbs

#Habs Gorges has expanded his 15-team list of teams to which he'd go. A couple in Canada have been added; he's not specifying which teams

Yeah, but, I think that's more about having accepted he's not going to be back with the Habs and possibly having it strongly implied that the most interested teams are also in Canada. Adding a couple Canadian teams doesn't really change that fact that, when he first put together his list, he excluded all of them. He'd clearly prefer not to play for another Canadian team.

That's the one that concerns me.  I would assume that one of the teams would be Vancouver given that he is from BC but that he would choose to add some of Calgary/Edmonton/Ottawa/Winnipeg over Toronto is what I find disappointing.  Calgary and Edmonton have some nice pieces but aren't good teams.  Ottawa and Winnipeg are arguably bigger disasters than the Leafs.

He's added a few more Canadian teams to his list, but it still excludes the Leafs? Wow.

Maybe with some time to reflect he'll come to appreciate the fact the Leafs really want him on their team and the Habs do not. Just suck it up, say au revoir and go where you're wanted!

They're also much lower pressure markets than either Toronto or Montreal - and that's definitely a factor for a lot of players.
