Leafs looking at Josh Gorges

I just can't see how it could be lupul. He's often injured, a $5M? cap hit, and hasn't been all that effective for some time.

I'd be surprised if they could get a 2nd rounder for him, let alone a top 3 D.

Well, since, really, Gorges is neither of those . . .

You don't think he would slot in to the Toronto top 3 as it currently sits? I'd have put him ahead of everyone but Phaneuf.

The state of the Leafs D in no way affects the talent level fo Josh Gorges.  He's a 4-5 defenseman.

Even if that's true, and I don't think it is as I think the Leafs see Phaneuf, Rielly and Gardiner as their top 3 in the very near future, that would be a reflection on the Leafs as opposed to Gorges. On a good team he's probably a 4/5 and an overpaid 4/5 at that.

Being one of a team's top 3 defenceman doesn't mean he's someone people consider to be a top 3 defenceman. And, really, I'd probably put him 4th on the Leafs' depth chart, behind Phaneuf, Rielly and Gardiner.

Even as a 4-5, I'm still disbelieving Lupul has enough trade value to motivate the habs.

Well, that's because you're pretty badly misrepresenting how good Lupul has been as a Leaf. It's fair to point out that he doesn't have a very good contract and that he's an injury risk, yes, but when you say "he hasn't been effective in some time" it's just not true. Over his last 85 regular season games he's got 33 goals and 62 points despite playing with some pretty mediocre linemates at times and getting second unit PP time.

Without heaping too much praise on the guy because he's certainly atrocious defensively and does go AWOL at times in the offensive zone too, he's a guy who has that ability to elevate his game to an elite level at times.  It isn't like he relies on his teammates to create all of his points, there are period in his play where Lupul looks like the best player on the ice for either team.  I don't think Lupul is the difference between Montreal losing against New York and making it to the Finals but I think it addresses a pretty big need for Montreal.  They acquired Vanek because they felt they needed a guy who could put up points.  I doubt Lupul finds himself demoted to the 4th line in a Game 7 situation.

@DarrenDreger: Toronto still waiting and hopeful Josh Gorges will have a change of heart. Otherwise, interest shifts to D.Boyle or Stephane Robidas. #FAF

I agree that that is wise, to focus on today, if Gorges is lollygagging.

It could be Lupul.  It's just that Lupul has a NTC as well, and I know we haven't heard anything from the Leaf side on who is going back the other way, but if Lupul had been asked to waive, I would have figured that would be reported.

Because the deal hinges on Gorges agreeing to it, I don't see why either the Leafs or Lupul would want it reported that he'd been asked to waive.

They wouldn't.  Normally though when a player has been asked to waive his no trade clause, it gets reported fairly quickly.  I guess in most of those cases, it's when the player needs to take some time to decide on whether or not they want to waive it.  I guess Lupul may want out of T.O. because of Randy, and he waived it pretty quickly.  Or Montreal is a team he is willing to go to.  I still think that in most cases, when it comes to NTC's, the media picks up on the waiving of them fairly quickly.

I think that's generally true but I also think that there's usually an interest on one side on the other to mention it, at least in part driven by the fact that public knowledge of such a request can lend itself to a player agreeing to it. Most players probably don't want it known that they aren't wanted.

If, however, Lupul doesn't want it known and the Leafs don't want it known...how would a reporter know?

I see your point.  Don't get me wrong, if something is going back to Montreal,  I would prefer Lupul over Kadri.  If for no other reason than I think Kadri is still unknown as far as what his ceiling is.  I just have the fear that it is Kadri.

I honestly don't care, but I don't get how he could hate Toronto but not have similar feelings towards buffalo...but whatever. it's kinda cool to hear a player actually say he dislikes another team.

MTL-TOR and MTL-BUF are two pretty different rivalries.
