Leafs looking at Josh Gorges

I doubt many middle aged players will ever choose the fishbowl of Canada over the obscurity of most US cities.  When you include the lower states it's a no brainer for me.  As a young player I pick Canada everyday, but as a Family man it's the AZ, Fla, Cali any day of the week.  These guys are working no matter how much we think differently.

That's the one that concerns me.  I would assume that one of the teams would be Vancouver given that he is from BC but that he would choose to add some of Calgary/Edmonton/Ottawa/Winnipeg over Toronto is what I find disappointing.  Calgary and Edmonton have some nice pieces but aren't good teams.  Ottawa and Winnipeg are arguably bigger disasters than the Leafs.

Maybe, but it almost might be an entirely empty gesture. Vancouver looks like they're going to ice a ECHL team next year and teams like Ottawa and Winnipeg aren't too far from where their internal budgets might be. Adding teams to his list that have no interest in adding him could just be a way of making it look like he's working with the Habs while holding out hope that he still goes to somewhere in the states.

They should move on from Gorges. Why try to get a guy who obviously doesn't want to play for you?

Unless it is delaying another move, I'd be willing to give it a day or two longer. Gorges has admitted to being in shock that Montreal no longer wants him. He may just be saying 'NO' because he's feeling jilted at the moment. Maybe cooler heads will prevail.

Yeah, I think this is more about not being wanted anymore in Montreal, than not wanting to play in Canada anymore. Sure, it probably had something to do with it, but being rejected, after signing a longer term deal to stay someplace probably sparks some emotions.

EDIT: Everything I've heard about him is that he is loved by his teammates and the fans. They were talking about him in a captaincy role a while back if I remember correctly.

#Habs Gorges has expanded his 15-team list of teams to which he'd go. A couple in Canada have been added; he's not specifying which teams

Yeah, but, I think that's more about having accepted he's not going to be back with the Habs and possibly having it strongly implied that the most interested teams are also in Canada. Adding a couple Canadian teams doesn't really change that fact that, when he first put together his list, he excluded all of them. He'd clearly prefer not to play for another Canadian team.

It could just be coincidence - because Montreal is the only Canadian team to have made the playoffs this past season, maybe he just wanted to go to contending teams.

Except that his no-trade list was submitted well before Montreal got serious about moving him. His not wanting to play for another Canadian team came first.

Maybe, but, that feels less likely to me. I guess it depends on whether he was to submit a list after every season or if the list was built into his contract.

A contract with a NTC is kind of like a marriage in which one partner has the right to refuse a divorce.

Brendan Shanahan continues to try and encourage Josh Gorges to accept trade to the Maple Leafs. So far, no luck, but still a chance.

Nothing like publicly begging a player to join your team.

I actually wouldn't mind Gorges, but the last Montreal Canadien defenceman we obtained tarnishes him for me.

When we hear who was set to go the other way for Gorges, we may be happy he nixed it.

Well, to be fair, it's Dreger suggesting something.  It's not like Shanahan is on TSN making a plea.

Not that I think it's a good idea anyways, especially given that Gorges has done a pretty decent job of publicly nixing the trade himself.

Right. It literally is nothing like publicly begging a player to join your team.

Once he realizes the best way to get back at management would be to join the Leafs, he'll take Toronto off his no-trade list.

Looks like Michael Del Zotto and Jamie McBain are going to UFA.  Would either of these guys upgrade our defence?

@LouisJean_TVA: Source says @MapleLeafs have offered a forward for @CanadiensMTL D Josh Gorges. They are "very agressive" I'm told.

Lupul?

Lupul makes sense if they're looking for an impact forward. But I also wouldn't be completely surprised if it was somebody like Holland or Ashton if they want a young player and more importantly cap space to take a run at somebody tomorrow.
