Going back to 1963 (that covers 52 drafts and that means ALL NHL drafts) Nazem Kadri sits:

24th in goals, 28th in assists and 29th in points for 7th overall draft picks.  Jeff Skinner is the only player who is ahead of Kadri despite being drafted in 2010 while Kadri was drafted in 2009.  If Kadri only plays to 30 he'll be in the top 15 for his draft position.  If he play a full career to 35 with a .1 PPG drop off for each year beyond 32 he would finish in the top 10 for 7th overall draft picks.  The notion that he's below average offensively is ridiculous.

The dude clearly said all drafts.  You're only looking at 52 years of NHL drafts, while completely ignoring NBA, NFL and MLB.

What about my fantasy draft?

Gentlemen, I have decided ? after a great deal of soul-searching, and based on the extensive statistical analysis you have so kindly provided ? I have decided to ... stand by my mild disappointment, unreasonable though it may seem to be to all of you.  :( :o :P

Well, you have no one to blame for your disappointment but yourself. :P

Kadri clearly is an above average nhl player.  However, his intangibles absolutely suck, imo.

Interestingly, I am more comfortable with this management groups' ability to turn out players.  The "feel" of the organization is different.  In the past it was "draft promising player, insert in line up, see what happens"  it was a sink or swim test vs actually growing an nhl player.  I think Luke Richardson could have been a "Pronger" like presence defensively but he was literally tossed out on the ice and told to go to it.  By the end of his career, he learned to be a more dependable player by developing with other franchises.  So yeah, getting Auston Matthews would be awesome but I am not going to throw a fit if we draft at a higher position.  I felt this year was more about protecting the players we are growing vs improving our chances of who we are going to draft in june.

Waaaa you didn't run the numbers for all Top 10 draftees like I asked waaaaa waaaaa

Anyway, so you're saying he's 24th in goals, 28th in assists, and 29th in points out of the 52 7th-pick draftees since the beginning of the draft?  Sounds like a little above the median, a little below, and a little below, yes?

Except for the whole fact that guys drafted in 1963 had full careers and Kadri is 25 and early in his.  And just because this is annoying me and I don't feel like prepping for my last licencing exam:

Kadri relative to draft picks #5-10 since 1963 (313 total picks)
114th in goals, 135th in assists, 135th in points

If we want to make a more reasonable comparison (based on PPG production)
60th in goals/game, 105th in assists/game, 59th in points/game

So decisively not average.

From 1967-2011 there were 195 forwards drafted 4th-10th overall. Kadri ranks tied for 49th in goals per game. And tied for 50th in points per game. Average is 0.23 goals per game, 0.57 points per game. So, again, basically the same results in terms of averages and Kadri being in the top 25% of the results.

What happened to the top 3?  :)

Seriously, don't bother with it, like I said not sure why anyone should care about my opinions of Kadri, which are close  the middle of the road anyway.

I am off to a meeting so can't play any more today, but the jousting has been fun.

...

You know what this calls for? An analysis of the intangibles of all draftees selected 4th-10th overall for all NHL drafts.

CtB. Your move.

I don't know what CtB has found, but my math shows that, on a scale of 1 to 10, the average 4th-10th overall picks comes out with a rating of U, while Kadri comes in with a rating of ;).
