Leafs sign undrafted NCAA prospect Spencer Abbott

I think it was Mac that recently said he was likely heading to free agency too.

I expect Anaheim will try to move his rights approaching/at the draft so they don't lose him for nothing. Since he was a 2nd round pick, if he takes the UFA route, there's no compensation for them.

The guy I just mentioned, Schultz...

Thanks.

In fairness, I started typing long before you posted that. But between phone calls and such it took me a long time to post it.

Nice to read something optimistic.  Life goes on and it's great to see assets making their way into the organization.

That's a possibility, but if Anaheim can't sign him I would think he would wait the little extra time and see what he can get on the open market.  I would think he would be excited at the prospect of playing with his old defence partner.

There was a nice write-up about the possibility of landing Schultz a little while back on MLHS:  http://mapleleafshotstove.com/2012/03/18/keep-an-eye-on-justin-schultz/

[Abott] had his best season offensively and was named this week one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award that goes annually to the top player in U.S. college hockey.

Too small to play major junior, Abbott played Junior A with the Hamilton Red Wings. He had a late growth spurt to reach 5-foot-10 and 175 pounds. He was an alternate captain on the Black Bears.

Abbott?s offensive numbers rose each year with Maine ? he led the team in scoring this year with 61 points (20 goals, 41 assists). He believes he?s ready for the NHL.

He has to sign an ELC, so, it's not really a matter of seeing what he can get - his contract options are very limited. Really, all he has is the right to choose where he'll play, and, as long as Anaheim aren't stupid about that, they'll take that into account before making any trade.

Anyone know how soon he could suit up for the Marlies? Can he join them right away?

If he signs an ATO, yes. Otherwise, he burns a year of the contract, and I doubt the Leafs would be up for that.

I'm a "meh" considering his size and age and college history of success.

Was Abbott ever drafted at all?

The guy that excites me the most is Schultz. From what I read (and the plus is that he was actually drafted) he has great potential. As others have said give Jake Gardiner a MLSE Visa card and tell him to go wild with his pal....

Good point, thanks.  Given Burke's relationship with the Ducks, I could see them working out an amicable deal/pick for the rights, assuming Schultz wants to play in Toronto.

Given that Abbott just signed, how many contract slots do we have available at this point?

I get what you're saying, it's not the most exciting thing in the world, but I'd rather pick up a decent prospect for free than not.

TSNBobMcKenzie: Abbott will report to TOR Marlies on ATO for balance of season. His one year entry level NHL contract begins next season.

Nice. Hopefully they get Schultz signed up too and Burke gets a shot at some acceleration...

That Alex Tran article had Schultz as an 8-10 pick if he was drafted this year ( I can't really say one way or the other ), wonder where Abbott would rank in a similar kind of comparison?

If they can pick up Schultz, it should be a pretty crowded blue line next year at camp.  I'm really hoping a couple of guys like Holzer and Blacker can step up next season and help turn the D around.
