It's pretty hard to watch that highlight and not see that Kadri did, as Carlyle said, miss his assignment.
Yup. Franson is playing the guy with the puck, forcing a pass over, if Kadri had gone with St. Louis as Franson pointed to him to do, there wouldn't be a chance for St. Louis to shoot there. Original puck carrier would have taken the shot with Franson there to potentially block it.
Yeah, that's not really my interpretation of it. Franson points at Hedman, who is Kadri's guy and Kadri doesn't get over to him, causing Franson to sort of back up and play the pass poorly. Franson should have had St. Louis, Kadri should have had Hedman and neither guy really did the job. You can hear it on the track, Mike Johnson immediately points out that Kadri was in the wrong position.
In any event it was Kadri's original mistake that led Franson to be in-between on the play. Had Kadri taken his man from the start it's a non chance.
With regards to Carlyle pointing out the mistake, I don't think it's a bad thing to do on a win and a game where Kadri generally feels good about himself. His post game comments show just how incredibly impressed with himself he was. Given that the Leafs won, and the blown assignment didn't lead to a goal because of Bernier's amazing save, it's a great time to point out to Kadri that he should have done better there. You're not pinning a loss on him, you're just telling him "here's a way you can get better".
