Luongo

So, if Burke is successful in bringing Luongo to the Leafs which one of Reimer or Scrivens do you keep?

Maybe I am just out of it, but I really thought that Burke was clear about wanting to start the year with Reimer/Scrivens and was not interested in Luongo. From what I have heard, Luongo is either going to the Panthers or he is going to be mighty awkward to deal with in Vancouver if they cannot trade him.

Brian Burke is being very coy about showing any interest in Luongo, but I still believe the Leafs are among the front runners, along with Florida to land his services.

Luongo will be bought out if there is such a provision in the new CBA and then will go to the next highest bidder.

The good 'ol amnesty clause.  I think there will be one in this CBA like they have in the NBA, but Luongo being a candidate?  As much as that makes sense, that is a huuuuge buyout to swallow for the Canucks.  If the cash portion of the buyout rules remained as they are today, it would cost the Canucks $27 million or $1.50 mil per year over 18 years to be rid of him.

My guess would be that Gillis hangs on to him and tries to move him during the season, crossing his fingers that the Leafs or whoever have big goaltending issues to start the year and panic.  If he can't move him after one year, maybe then he pulls the trigger on the amnesty clause.  Still, tough sell to ownership to a guy you committed that much money and term to a very short time ago.

I think they are going to go after Loungo once the CBA is worked out.  Probably Franson, Blacker or Holzer, Ashton and a 2nd.

Probably not.

Yeah. My guess is the new CBA will make acquiring Luongo and his contract even less appealing than it is now.

From Twitter: Jason Botchford (writes for The Province in BC), said on the radio either today or yesterday that Florida is out of the running and it is down to Chicago or Toronto.

Can players be dealt during the lockout or is this all speculation that may not come up for 18 months or so?

I think it's more the latter. I suppose nothing specifically prevents players from being traded as, outside of their salary cap implications and movement clause related issues, trades aren't really covered by the CBA. That being said, outside of some AHL player movement, I doubt we see any trades made until after this whole CBA mess is settled - and, because of that, I call BS on this recent report. No one is in on Luongo or any other player right now. I'm sure GMs are still in contact with each other in some form, but I strongly doubt there's any real negotiations going on.

Yeah, that strikes me as on the money. I mean especially when you're dealing with smart GMs, and Florida, Chicago and Toronto all have one, the idea that anyone would trade for a contract like Luongo's without knowing how the next CBA plays out strikes me as really unlikely.

Florida especially strikes me as a destination that makes little to no sense. I know it's easy to forget as Leafs fans but some teams actually have to worry about salary, not just the salary cap.

Beyond that, if this is a substantial lockout, losing one of the few "prime" years of Luongo's contract really makes me weary of giving up much of anything for him.

In recent weeks, Luongo has come to the realization that his hope of being traded to Florida is hanging on by a thread, if at all.

And if Florida is out, and that's how things looked before the lockout, what's left? Toronto has already made a solid offer for Luongo, and when asked about a deal to the Leafs, GM Mike Gillis said there were several assets the Buds have which can get it done.

Gillis was also asked recently about his relationship with Burke, and said they get along "well enough" to pull the trigger on this thing.

It just re-affirmed what many of thought for months - the Leafs make the most sense. But what would that mean for Luongo? If he is struggling in October, will assistant GM Dave Nonis be knocking on his door to go over paddle-down techniques?

If there is encouraging news for Luongo, it's that before the CBA expired at least one mystery team, and maybe two, entered the Luongo sweepstakes. Team Mysterious wasn't one of the ones which had previously been attached to a Luongo trade in rumours, so scratch Columbus off your list along with the obvious ones.

Edmonton might be one of the 'mystery' teams.

Like the article says though, would Vancouver be interested in trading Luongo within their division? I mean give Edmonton a goalie like Luongo and they are a legit threat.

Maybe it's just me but I can't help but be a little skeptical about mysterious reports about unnamed teams entering the Luongo sweepstakes if it's reported by a Vancouver paper. It seems like all summer we've heard about mysterious teams interested when it really does seem like the Canucks would take anything resembling a solid offer for the guy.

That just stinks of someone in the Canucks front office trying to spark interest in a goalie who has next to no value.

Interesting to hear @JSportsnet say he believes #Canucks and #Leafs have Luongo trade all but done and are just waiting for CBA resolution.

He said that?

A couple thoughts from Dobber;

Dobber ‏@DobberHockey

Bozak and a 2nd is as high as I'd go. And I'd expect a thank you for taking that contract on under the new CBA

Gillis was drunk if he asked for Gardiner, Bozak, Frattin and a 1st for Luongo. Hammered. He should be giving assets to lose the contract.
