Luongo

Lindback? Bernier?

Both: unproven.

I guess if you think either one is a significantly better prospect goalie than Scrivens, then sure go for it. But we will again get caught in this risk of trading a LOT to get one of them and it could completely backfire.

Harding... hasn't exactly proven a whole helluva lot. I just don't see the point in signing him unless there are no other options. If I'm going the career backup direction I want Biron instead. He's proven a lot more.

I'm thinking this only goes to strengthen the rumor that Luongo is coming to Toronto, Surely Burke would have offered more than a 7th rounder for Vokoun if he was in the plans.

I doubt it. I think this is the sort of thing where it sort of works backwards. Vokoun wanted to go to a contender so Washington worked out a deal with them rather than there being an open bidding process.

Vokoun signing in Pittsburgh could very well mean that Fleury is now on the market.

That strikes me as pretty unlikely. Vokoun wasn't a world beater himself this year. I can't see this as anything other than trying a 1a and 1b situation.

Vokoun gets $2M per year on the two year deal.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
Vokoun has agreed to terms on a two year deal with PIT.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
PIT acquires right to Tomas Vokoun from WSH for 7th rd pick. Which suggests Vokoun's new contract in PIT is likely done or will be shortly.

Tampering?  ;D

Too bad. I thought Vokoun would have been Burke's best option.

I hadn't considered the Pens to be a destination for Vokoun though maybe I should have after Fleury's playoff performance.

Yeah I can't see that either.  I think they want Vokoun to both push Fleury and also be able to play a good number of regular season games so Fleury doesn't get worn down playing 70 games a year.

I thought that initially, but I'm thinking this will allow Pittsburgh to rest Fleury more throughout the season and keep him fresher for the playoffs.

He has started 67, 65 and 67 games, respectively, in the last three seasons.  That's a lot of hockey for a goalie who started 62 games plus the playoffs prior to that which was their Stanley Cup year.

That's how it struck me. They'll push each other.

Might free up Staal as a candidate to free cap space ...

Take it for what it's worth, but Kypreos suggested that Brian Burke turned down Vokoun for that same contract (on HockeyCentral at Noon on the FAN).

I'm not so sure. There's been talk about Pittsburgh feeling like they need a shake-up, changes to the core, etc. Fleury has been a weak link for them in the playoffs for a few seasons now, carries a significant cap hit and may be able to bring something of value in return.

Yeah, but the alternative is the idea of a Pittsburgh team that was considered a cup favourite this year putting just about all of their chips on a 36 year old Vokoun coming off a groin injury. I'd be blown away if Fleury gets dealt.

I would have jumped at that deal but only after checking thoroughly into his health. He had a pretty nasty groin injury that eliminated his services from the playoffs. Maybe Burke didn't feel he'd be sound enough as a starter ... ??

Mirtle just wrote that the Leafs were interested but didn't want to sign a contract before July 1st. That leads me to believe that Burke has his sights set a little higher *cough* Luongo *cough*.

If Burke and co. want a proven #1 goalie then Vokoun at this stage of his career wasn't the way to go.  Like you said that groin injury may or may not play a huge factor with him, why take the risk of him getting re-injured and then having your unproven goalies holding the fort again?  Better to set sites on Luongo who's had a pretty good injury-free career overall.

Pittsburgh Tribune Review: Penguins land veteran goalie Vokoun from Capitals
Acquiring a veteran backup was a top priority for Penguins general manager Ray Shero. Management and coaches privately felt Fleury?s play suffered late last season because he was forced into a heavy workload, including several appearances on back-to-back days. Brent Johnson, the Penguins? backup the last three seasons, was not available for much of the second half because of injury, and his dip in performance did not inspire confidence from the staff.

Gist I'm getting from the Pens media is that Vokoun will replace Johnson as backup.

You know, with Luongo I've been thinking about cap hit, age, term, blah, blah, blah.  But at this point I've decided I just don't care.  Get him in the fold and let's enjoy being that much better next year.  Let the people getting paid $$$$$ figure out the rest of the mess at this point.  8)
