Luongo

I think we go with our goalies we have now. I think we will be fine.

I'd like a bit more experience but they're the best option we have at the moment.  Even with all this talk about Bernier on the radio now, I looked up his stats, he's actually got LESS experience than Reimer.  Also worse stats on a better team.  Who's to say he's an upgrade at all?  He's totally unproven.  Unless something else jumps out for the Leafs, a veteran goalie that won't cost much, we probably have to stick with what we got.

I could be wrong but I doubt Smith considers leaving Phoenix.  They play a great system and he should be rewarded with a good contract from them as it's a great fit for both parties.  As I stated about Bryz before I would also be reluctant to chase a Phoenix goalie and give a big contract based on results there.

I think we go with our goalies we have now. I don't think we'll be fine, although for some reason I expect bigger things out of Scrivens than Reimer.

I was in the 'Get Luongo' camp and I still wouldn't be upset to see it happen, since it's almost a guarantee of playoffs, but I can see the benefits of just playing this shortened season out and, worst-case scenario, the Leafs get another high pick. Then next off-season, make a big move or two.

There is no way I make that trade, and I am glad neither Burke nor Nonis appear willing to either.

Bozak + Kadri + 2nd for a 33yo goalie with 10 years remaining on his contract? Best of luck Gillis.

I've been one of the strongest supporters of acquiring Luongo, but I've been seduced slightly by the chance of achieving some playoff success now. The longer this process goes on, the more I realize that it's not the right trade. The only thing that makes it possible, is if he comes dirt cheap. I don't want to see any youth or high draft picks go.

As much as the contract is far too long, I'm not too worried about it. It's the possibility of losing prospects and picks that make it bad. The cap recapture penalty if he retires isn't that bad.

Honestly, Gillis needs his head examined if he really thought he was going to get that kind of package for someone most teams wouldn't take for free.

Apparently Gillis "called out" the Leafs for using the media to effect trade talks.

::) ::) Not enough eye rolling smilies in the world for Mike Gillis.

How is that even true? I agree, not enough smiley's indeed. Is there anything this guy doesn't beach about?

That is actually hilarious.

Calling out refs prior to a game seven in the media is fine though?

Plus, if he wasn't that concerned about trading Luongo anyway, why is he that upset about any of this?

I think you answered your own question.

Gillis has always bothered me as a GM.  He inherited the core of that team from Burke/Nonis, his most noteworthy moves are just re-signing the players that were already there for him, including the ridiculous Luongo contract.
