Luongo

Buffalo has been doing weird things again lately.  The Roy trade left them really weak in their top six at centre. There was a lot of tension between Miller and the team last year. If things don't go well this year, he might bail or they might move him.

Can't wait!!! ?@NHL: #Canucks fans, are you ready to see Cory Schneider as No. 1 in net? #hockeyisback?

Gillis comments
"Fair value is different for every team that you speak to because they have different players, they have different concerns and different contractual issues that play into what they have available that you might want. The notion that we were asking for too much was floated in the Toronto media by a team that was extremely interested in acquiring Roberto and were using every means possible to try and force us to do something that we didn't think was right. That's nothing new in this business and it's' not the type of pressure that I'm going to succumb too."
...
"I don't care, there's a lot of stuff that's going to happen in the first two weeks of this season. If you start giving all-star players away you'll be at the bottom of this league in a hurry. So we have two really good goalies, I don't know what's going to happen with others team - players might not play well, there may be injuries that they have at that position which may change the landscape. But as it sits today, we need to get something in return that is going to help our team and we're not in the business of just helping other teams so...

I'm comfortable with both these guys starting the season here, I'll be comfortable if we finish the season with them. If something happens and comes our way that allows us to improve, then we're going to do it. And it's all subject to Luongo wanting to go to that city. So, it is a little bit more complicated than people like to think but we feel very comfortable with where we sit today with our goalies."

Mike is going to be taking the heat for Luongo's disposition for a while yet.

I continue to be glad the Leafs didn't take on his contract.

LOL @ Gillis getting mad about media being used to influence the Luongo deal.

Like the random interest from the Flyers the other day had nothing to do with you, Mike.  ::)

This is all about Mike Gillis being an idiot.  Gives big contract to Luongo.  Gives big contract to Cory Schneider, despite him playing less then Reimer did in his first year.  If Reimer can come back down to earth, could Schneider as well?  I think Vancouver should hold on to both goalies.  The only reason there's trade talk is because Gillis's outlandish contracts.

Gillis is holding out longer than Murray did with Heatley!

I can't recall the details of that trade. Did the offer get better as time passed, or worse?

It was more a comment on the timing of the deal.  Maybe the Ferret or Sucker can comment on this better than I can, but Heatley showed up to Ottawa's training camp for a couple of sessions (after asking to be traded during the summer).  Needless to say it was pretty awkward and had the potential to turn into quite the distraction.  He was dealt before the season started.

It seems like Gillis has no problem with the situation possibly turning into a team distraction.

Apparently Gillis "called out" the Leafs for using the media to effect trade talks.

::) ::) Not enough eye rolling smilies in the world for Mike Gillis.

This guy is a piece of work...so it was MLSE puppeting Toronto media to try and get Gillis to make a deal for a goalie in Vancouver?  Got it Mike, you're not going to be pressured by media in a city 3 time zones away...you're a real tower of strength.

Meanwhile in the same interview he says:

"There's lots of teams inquiring about Roberto .. there's lots of stuff up in the air"

Yeah, don't use the media to influence it right Mike?

Could Gillis be running scared that nobody really wants Luongo at his price. Given tha it is only the leafs who are interested now. He knows he will have to but Luongo out in the summer. If I were the leafs I would wait. If Reimer rebounds like I think he will great. If leafs struggle they could get top pick and sign Luongo as a free agent.

I picture Gillis sitting in his office during that whole thing with the Sedins, and when he heard it he was like:

"TAMPERING!!! OHH OHH THAT'S TAMPERING!!! YOU HEARD IT RIGHT? THE TAMPERING? THAT'S TAMPERING, IT'S TAMPERING! Oh I am soooooo telling...."

If Luongo gets bought out, he'll be signing in Florida for a pretty good contract and then picking up 2 pay cheques.

Question: Is Gillis becoming "the face" of his franchise? Just something that popped into my El Dorado 12 saturated brain.

Ooh that stuff is good. I have to buy a bottle today, thanks for the reminder ;)

One of my favs.

Mount Gay Extra Old is my fav but it is a tad pricey. That 12 yr El Dorado is prob the best deal for the quality.
