Luongo

Cory Schneider   VAN 4 GP 4 starts  3.13 .897 1 SO
Roberto Luongo VAN 4 GP 3 starts 1.61 .938 1 SO

Looks like somebody is trying to make a statement.

Wonder if there's anything there with Schneider and the pressure to perform?  I'm 100% speculating, but I would assume there's huge pressure on Schneider to cement his #1 status since all the talk has been about trading Luongo. Maybe it's an uncomfortable situation for him?

I believe so, I mean like our young goalies and the pressure that surround them to perform, Scheider is also bathing in this.  It is one thing to perform well as a backup behind Luongo but quite another thing to be given the keys to the  Porsche.  We tend to downplay the immense pressure and mental aspect when evaluating our young goalies and when they have issues we just say well, they are not good goaltenders.  Who is to say a guy like Reimer or Scrivens would not have performed just as well as Schneider backing up a guy like Luongo while being acclimated to the NHL, rather than to be just thrust into the #1 position in the insanity that is Leaf Nation.  I mean look at Reimer spelling the vet Giguere in a lower pressure role during his first and successful taste of the NHL.  He wasn't told he was the number 1 so the pressure was drastically less apparent.  We need to understand this and realize it also happens in other markets.  Development takes time right and there are extenuating factors that can take hold.

Having said that Schneider was awful during the lockout in Europe as well.  This may have been building within him as soon as he signed that contract and was told he was the guy.

Just watched the highlights of the Canucks / Wings game this afternoon - Luongo was left in for the entire game of an 8-3 loss - there were a couple stinkers in that bunch too.

I wonder whether how well a goaltender plays has just about nothing whatsoever to do with factors like whether he is the starter or not or how many fans of his team there are or how many newspaper articles are written about him.

So your saying there isn't a mental pressure aspect to how well they perform especially in a young goalie?

8 goals against Luongo?  Does Vancouver need us to trade them a goalie?

Yeah I think we may have to help them out.

We don't have any on ridiculous contracts though...in that case, they probably won't want them.

Did Luongo storm across the ice and declare he had played his last game as a Canuck ala Patrick Roy?

I would so love for Nonis to call and offer one to Gillis and then ask him for something assanine lol.  Kadri and Bozak have 29 points between them.  Henrik Sedin and Burrows have 28 points between them so really drive up the blood pressure of Gillis and ask for those two  ;D

Sometimes the best trades are the ones you don't make.

Tweets from Damien Cox:

"Worth noting at June draft Canucks could've had Kadri, Bozak and a pick for Luongo. Got greedy. Now have lost as many as have won."

"Canucks were looking for something more like Gardiner, Frattin, 1st round pick and another piece. Felt could demand that from weak Leafs."

"Those who once sneered at possibility Kadri or any Leaf wud be adequate compensation for Luongo now insisting that deal never available."

"Gillis banked on Leafs not be able to get far with Reimer/Scrivens combo, wud come begging for Luongo. To be fair, many agreed with him."

I know I can't prove it, I just don't believe that's true. I cannot believe either Nonis or Burke would have made that deal. And I can't believe if that deal was in fact true, that Vancouver wouldn't have jumped all over it.

I don't think it's accurate either. Probably was something more along the lines of Kadri or Bozak and a pick.

I think it was bozak and a 3d or something of that nature... I really think they were saying 'we'll just take him off your hands if you like'.

I have a feeling the Canucks are going to be forced to move Schneider, not Luongo, if they can't find a sucker to take the contract real soon.  They may not have a choice this summer.

Right now they have $3.9 mil in cap space to fill NINE roster spots, or less than $450K average.  now they don't have high end guys to replace, but that is below league minimum.  Something has to give.  Never mind trying to add anything of substance to the roster.

Schneider would get them a pretty nice return I would imagine.  Given that, and the fact they can't move Luongo, I think it's their only choice.

really hope that's not true...i don't like the thought that the leafs would have been that stupid ...this was a perfect year to gamble on our goaltending ...if it works..we finally have something moving forward...if it doesn't ..we pick high in a deep draft..

Buy outs?

That suggested deal was still ridiculous back then before Kadri's coming out party this season.

I don't know who I believe but I know I want this to blow up in Gillis' face.
