Marlies Talk

So that's Zigomanis, Hamilton, Acton, and Scott all confirmed gone. Colborne is likely going to stick with the Leafs considering his waiver status.

That's a top AHL line and two very good bottom-6 forwards. Spott has his work cut out for him.

It's rather obvious how much the players loved Eakins, as soon as he's gone, a few players followed him and others loyalty to Toronto loosened. I'm not saying that Eakins had everything to do with some players loving Toronto, but you can just tell that he was a big part of some players sticking around a bit longer.

The Marlies roster last season was obviously pretty all over the place because of the lockout. But further to my last point, of the top-11 scorers for the team last season it's likely only two return this season (D'Amigo and Abbott).

I wouldn't say that is the case, Zig's production has been on the decline and at 32 he realizes he will never get a taste of the NHL again as a Leaf. I just think that in his case the Leafs don't want his roster spot blocking a prospect.  I am sure Zig is hoping that the Sabres will sign him to an NHL contract if he does well in the AHL with the Amerks.

Acton just wasn't in the plans with this club and at 25 he still has NHL aspirations. 25 would seem to be an age that you either have to crack the big club or realize your in a nowhere situation. Hamilton is another guy that wasn't going to make the Leafs this season.  Acton and Hamilton are obviously favs of Eakins so I am sure it is more of Eakins suggesting they go after these players rather than these players not choosing to stay with the Leafs organization as career AHLers.

Scott was simply a case of going where the money was in Europe and maybe realizing that he will never make the show.  I think his strong playoff last year really became his payday and he jumped on it, can't say I blame him.  When your making 85k with the Marlies and you have the chance to sign a one year 2 million contract in Sweden, that is a no brainer.

Good points, but I still think that Eakins leaving made it easier for other guys to leave. They sure left in a hurry. I understand Scott's position, if that is what he's being paid, but Hamilton I think was liked by the Leafs and could have been good bottom line depth IMO.

At any rate, I don't think Zigo is making the NHL ever again anyway, but that's me. I wish we could have held on to Eakins longer, but I suppose the time for that would have been when Wilson was fired. Hopefully this Spott guy is as good as his accomplishments, or at least what his resume implies.

I'm surprised Greg Scott didn't get look by some other NHL team. He seemed to have more than average skill and delivered in the playoffs as well.

I'm sure he'll be tearing it up in Europe.

Aside from Scott perhaps and Hamilton, I doubt the Leafs wanted to keep them anyway.  I am sure they would have liked to retain Hamilton for depth but they likely didn't want to prevent Hamilton from attaining an NHL job and I think that will be a given with the Oilers.  We have lots of guys in our system that can replace these players and need more ice time.  Ross, Broll and Devane perhaps even Crescenzi and Carrick are ready for more of an agitator, shutdown, enforcer role to replace a guy like Acton.  Mckegg and Ashton need to be given more opportunity in an offensive role and guys like Leivo and Biggs will be with the Marlies  and these players need to step up and replace the likes of Ziggy, Hamilton and Scott.  There comes  a time where the vets need to go to allow for the kids to player a bigger role.

Based on the Leafs roster this year I fully expect one of the Marlies to play 3rd line winger.

It might just default to Colborne (as LW/C) as he has to pass through waivers now but if not the only other options I could figure would be D'Amigo and possibly Ashton (who still hasn't excelled) and Ross.

Colborne is a lock for the reason you stated.  The extra forward that will be in the press box or dresses for the fourth line when McLaren sits is the question.  We would like to think it is D'Amigo or Ashton but with cap hits of just over 1 mill each it is looking like it is going to be one of Bodie or Smith due to the  cap crunch.  I guess it all depends on what we can get Kadri, Gunnarsson, Fraser and Franson signed for. You would have to believe that whatever the case it will be tight anyway so I seriously doubt we will see D'Amigo or Ashton until next year sadly enough.  If Liles contract is traded away to free up space that will change of course.
