Marlies Talk

Along with Holzer?s focus on developing his skills for the next level, he?s recently taken on the responsibility of assisting prospect Morgan Rielly as he gets his first taste of pro hockey.

Since finishing his season of junior the 19-year-old has played in eight games with the Marlies, nearly every shift with Holzer lining up to his side.

?Only thing we asked Holzer to do is communicate with him, and he?s good for that,? said Marlies head coach Dallas Eakins. ?Holzer?s a character guy and we know he can help (Rielly) on his way. With Morgan coming in, we watched a couple of his games on DVD and we thought it was important to get a good steady guy with him and Holzer?s certainly that.?

Rielly, who was picked fifth overall by Toronto in 2012 for his smooth skating and ability to rush the puck, has benefited from having a stay-at-home D-man beside him.

?He?s a good player, very smart,? said Holzer. ? He uses his speed very well and I make sure to back him up so he feels comfortable rushing the puck.?

Gonna be at the game tonight, I'll have a eye out for Rielly and a few others.

Nice. These were the lines for last nights game, so while there might be a substitution here or there it's probably what you'll see:

Ross ? Connolly ? Zigomanis
D?Amigo ? Acton ? Scott
Abbott ? McKegg ? Lasch
Devane ? Carrick ? Ryan

Rielly ? Holzer
Ranger ? Blacker
Marshall ? Komisarek

Sparks was fine, but the Marlies mostly carried the play and were the far superior team. Rielly was good, still learning, but good. Lots of the junior guys were good and had chances. Tim Connolly cannot win a puck battle to save his career.

Tim who?? Good on Sparks..nice to see a good goaltending prospect that we don't have to rush..gives up plenty of options going forward in future years..

I would imagine he plays in the ECHL next season depending on what they do with Owuya as he is a RFA.  Rynnas looks to be a goner for sure as a RFA and we know Rynnas is working on a contract in Europe.  I can't see them going with Owuya and Sparks next season in the AHL maybe if Owuya had of stepped up this season which he didn't.  I would imagine they retain a guy like MacIntyre or some other vet like him.  There is always the chance the Leafs sign a vet backup next season and Scrivens may go back to the Marlies and earn his NHL salary there as next season he is on a one way.  I imagine the last scenario all depends on how Reimer and Scrivens close out the season and playoffs.

Will Andrew Macwilliam see any playing time for the Marlies before seasons end?

He's playing tonight.

edit: Or maybe not. A Marlies blogger said that he was in, but his name isn't on the boxscore.

Dreadful game lol, the AHL live is always a rip off at 6.99 per game however, it is the only option at times.  Biggs didn't even play whom I was really interested in seeing.  Marlies looked flat from the get go.  MacIntyre was shaky. Reilly is far from ready, he just didn't stand out out there, I can't see him competing for a spot next year with the Leafs.  Two points in 10 Marlie games so far.  I could see him playing another year in Junior or maybe he will stick with the Marlies but I would not even entertain him stealing a spot on the Leafs, that is a smart move though.  Connolly looks disinterested and didn't impress whatsoever but I guess one shouldn't be surprised by that.  Komi looked good and is far more into the game than Connolly.  Holzer was fine as well.  Hard to gleem much from this game though as it was an all around poor effort.

Marlies have clinched a playoff spot. Currently 5 points ahead of Rochester for the North Division lead with each team having 5 games left.

I can't see Eakins letting them rest on their laurels....Abbotsford is a good team, well coached...lets hope Reilly can pick it up a bit.

So the Marlies finished up their season today winning a shootout 4-3 over St. John's at Ricoh.  They finish 5th in the league with 97 points, 8 back of Providence who led the league and just 3 points back of Springfield who finished 2nd.  Quite a feat considering the turnover in players since the lockout and right up until the end of the season.  They will face the Rochester Americans in the first round, a team they dominated all season to the tune of 9 wins and 1 loss.

Last year?s Marlies: A team with a dream

When Damien Cox puts his mind to it, he can write some good sports articles. Too bad he doesn't do it as nearly often as I've always thought he could.

I agree. I think he's an excellent writer, when he's not lashing out at the fan base. But then again, he's worked in the Toronto sports media for quite a while now, it has to be frustrating sometimes...
