Matthews signs 5 year contract, $11.634mil AAV

Not fantasy at all.  Matthews isn't the 2nd best player in the league based on his points, yet he's being paid with the 2nd highest cap hit in the league as of right now.  I'd be fine with that if they could guarantee he's a Leaf for the next 7-8 years, but they only got 5.  Other teams have managed to get their stars for 8, so it's a failure on the Leafs part, pure and simple.

Tavares signed for 8 years. If you really thought that Matthews and Marner were going to sign for 8 then you have not been paying attention very well.

But sure, sign them to 8 years and never build a team around them.

Why can't Leafs fans be happy?

One can be happy and critical at the same time.

I'm glad it's done, but I would have expected about $500K less for a 5 year term, given it walks him into UFA.

It's nothing that's going to change the dynamic of the team or anything, so really I'm just glad it's a longish term deal, and it seems to have been done without any drama.

The next deal buried CHI. The 5 years at a reasonable cap percentage gives them a window to do more now. 8 years and there would be less to go around.

Exactly.  I'm happy he's here, just wished it was guaranteed for longer.  You look around and see other teams doing it, why not us?

Dubas' negotiation style:
There's plenty of evidence out there in his transactions: Dubas is not out to 'win' against the players he wants to sign; he wants to find the right numbers that best fit everyone's requirements.

Dreger says on an 8 year deal, Leafs were looking at 14-14.5 million. That's what he would have got either here or somewhere else.

What? I thought it was common knowledge he was going to sign a huge offer sheet from the 'Yotes. ;D

Glad it's done. Would have preferred more years or a lower cap, but, this is very much in line with his value, so, no complaints.

I was guaranteed there would be an offer sheet. I feel cheated.

You can be critical and happy at the same time. You cannot be happy while calling the deal a "loss".

Matthews, Marner, and Nylander are the types of players you should be okay paying fair market value for and then you nickel and dime the depth.

The Leafs already have Rielly, Kadri, and Muzzin, and sort of Tavares on decent discounty deals. Nylander?s is a friggin steal too.

There?s a new paradigm in superstar contracts. This is fine.

Absolutely in agreement. Back when they drafted this game-changer core I was thinking a full 8 year deals for all would be the thing that lessens the AAV hit a bit, but it's turned out the opposite.

Some perspective gentlemen: Young star forwards in this League help to compose their team's core at just 21 years of age now. The old "bridge deal" is finished. What do you think the Big 3 would get if they went TO MARKET on July 1st? Completely entering their prime? You can only imagine...

Something like:
Matthews: $14 million x 8 years
Marner: $13 million x 8 years
Nylander: $9 million x 8 years

Everyone did well here. Glad it's done. Only one left.

Your entire argument is that other players didn't get as much money as they could and Matthews did.  So my argument is the Leafs management failed to convince Matthews to get paid what other comparable contracts are, in both dollars and term.

No, my "argument" is that this stacks up very comparably to past 5 year contracts for elite level players on their second deals as a % of the cap and that because this deal isn't 100% of what YOU wanted doesn't make it a "loss".

Which players signed for 14% of the cap on a 5 year deal out of ELC?  There may be, I'm just not aware of them.  Kanes and Toews 5 year deals were 11.09% which would be a huge difference in Matthew's cap hit.

I don't believe any of that.

You're free to go back and read CtB's posts if you can get the tears out of your eyes.

Nice reply.

It should be noted post-CBA these bonus-laden contracts will likely be capped if the NHL gets its way. I hope getting that kind of bonus money upfront brought the cap hit down a bit. I hope this consideration is also used in the Marner negotiations.

Bobby Mac thinks that Marner will either be a 3 year deal or a 6/7/8 year deal, but likely not the same expiry date as Matthews.
