Matthews signs 5 year contract, $11.634mil AAV

Agreed.  Anyway, Marner will get done soon despite what Ferris says about waiting until the off-season.  They were waiting for Matthews, now that it's done I expect Marner to get announced before the season is up.

Hopefully before the deadline so they can possibly make moves at the deadline.

Bobby Mac thinks that Marner will either be a 3 year deal or a 6/7/8 year deal, but likely not the same expiry date as Matthews.

I don't really get that. It's not like having those deals expire constitutes some incredible workload for the teams. It might be tough to absorb huge spikes to the cap in any one year but there's no guarantee that 3rd contracts are significantly bigger than 2nd ones.

Minimally, the counter argument to this is that they all came due this time around and it will work out, so....

It's genuinely upsetting to contrast the reaction to this contract to the reaction Zaitsev's contract received.

Leafs fans right now are the girls on My Super Sweet 16 crying because they got the BMW sedan, not the convertible.

The 3rd contract will look bigger but it'll likely be roughly the same percentage of the cap. So the increase in their AAVs should be relatively easy to absorb considering 1) the cap will have also gone up and 2) Dubas will likely make sure there aren't any Marleau/Zaitsev type deals on the books in 24/25.

I still think in the next CBA teams should be able to trade their cap space. Carolina has $16 million in cap space they can't/won't use.  I'm sure the Leafs/Flyers/Bruins/Canadiens/etc would be willing to give up assets (even good assets) to get that.

Works for everyone - richer teams can spend over the cap if they need to.  Smaller teams get assets back for space they wouldn't have used anyways.  Players get more money as all that unused cap space will probably get used on them.

I wish Zaitsev's contract was heavy bonus front-loaded. He might be movable at 20% his salary.

If players are still getting a fixed % of league revenues then players will get the exact same money, just from different sources.

To create any sort of fair system trading for cap space wouldn't be enough. You need to have some mechanism that accounts for just the fundamental reality that player value varies from market to market and factors outside of team control have significant impact(like, say, tax rates in Florida). Anything other than that is just taking your finger out of one leak to plug up another.

Well let?s hope for a more consistent effort on a nightly basis and hopefully stays healthy. Otherwise overpayment.

As much as I like Dubas I  think he?s messed up the 3 contracts starting with Nylander. Waiting far too long to try and get these deals done and all 3 will be overpaid.

All 3 could and should have been signed for 24 million tops.
