Mayor Rob Ford

I like how he thinks he 'probably' smoked crack during a drunken stupor like he doesn't remember due to his drunkness.  I'm pretty sure he'd remember having to 'come down' from more than just alcohol the next day.

Beyond that it was like he was using the fact that he was drunk as an excuse for anything else he might have consumed. Like that made it all ok or that it wasn't really his decision because he was drunk and therefore couldn't be faulted for his actions. That's the vibe I got anyway.

I guess this would have also been his defense had their been a video of him grabbing that woman's ass....i wonder what the limits of the "i was drunk" defense are....

I'm sorry i ran over your child..i was drunk....
I'm sorry i raped someone..i was drunk...
I'm sorry that i ran for mayor ..lied to the people and did crack cocaine... i was drunk

Sorry I jaywalked... I was drunk.  :o

Exactly. Plus he seems to believe there are no consequences for his actions.  he can just apologize and gets off without a hitch, according to him.

I think that what bothers me the most right now. He just says "I'm sorry" without really meaning it and all consequences are supposed to disappear because he loves his job? I'm sorry, but that's not how the real world is supposed to work.

What are the consequences though? Stepping down as mayor isn't a consequence, it's a choice. Head far a I know, he can't be forced out of office unless he is charged criminally. Election time is coming. He may have to face the music then.

Outside of this situation exposing a GIGANTIC flaw in our political system when it comes to a complete inability to do anything about an elected official who turns out to be a total disaster, pretty much anyone else would have realized by now that they need to step down. If for no other reason than the complete embarrassment and shame he should be feeling for all of this, never mind needing to get help for an addition and take the enormous amount of stress off himself and his family.

he's going to face the music at election time. At least, he better.  The apathetic people who didn't bother to vote against him last time sure better be out in full force this time, or they could have "Ford" more years.

then again at this rate, there is still a good chance he's in jail or dead before that happens.

Or with a nearly unchanged approval rating, its not out of the question that he could actually contend in another race.

Marion Barry all those years ago continued to win elections in Washington, DC after his crack scandal/prison time.

The core Ford Nation loyalists who would probably vote for the guy if he showed up to City hall drunk and naked every day, with a crack pipe in his mouth, as long as he kept making his hollow promises about saving them money.

Just mind boggling.  And they seriously don't care about the guy if they are fine with his "habits" as long as he saves them money (which he isn't doing but saying he is).  It's quite pathetic.

Seems he is content to let the people decide his fate.

That's probably because his fate won't be decided for a year and political scandals tend not to have that kind of lifespan. Of course, knowing Ford, he'll find his way back into the media with some other scandal.

I don't see this one going away...i think it'll be a slow bleed ..like being stabbed in the stomach.  the crack smoking is perhaps the most sensationalist part..but i still think the stuff he did the cover it up will be the real story

From the article:
Forum Research said Ford?s strongest support is among Toronto?s oldest, least wealthy and least educated residents, drivers, property owners and people who live in suburbs, especially Scarborough, where the mayor has been pushing for a subway extension.

Ford?s fiercest opponents are younger, wealthier and better educated Torontonians, in addition to transit users, renters and residents of downtown and East York, according to the poll released Tuesday morning.

The above speaks volumes of segments of the city's population on who's pro vs anti-Ford.

Aka: the demographic that didn't get out and vote last time and sure as heck better vote this time if Ford actually makes it to the next election.  I can't really see what else could happen for them to be motivated to make sure this freak does not get re-elected.  They would only have themselves to blame if he did.

Sure. But meanwhile, who knows how much damage or how much more of this freak show will go on over the next 11.5 months while he's still in the mayor's chair.  That to me is the problem. If the election was in six weeks.. great.  But a year is too long to have to wait to deal with this guy.

Admittedly don't know as much about this stuff, but I thought I recalled seeing a graphic that showed basically all of Toronto proper voted against Ford while all of the outlying suburbs voted for Ford?

Yes. That is what happened.  Problem is not enough folks in Toronto proper actually got out to vote.  I suspect it will be different next time.

Ahh didn't realize that was an issue too.

Ford got around 350,000 votes to win the election.  That's about maybe 15% of the population of Toronto?  Municipal voter turnouts are notoriously low.

Everyone in Ford's wheelhouse are the folks who usually have the highest turnouts... "the oldest, least wealthy and least educated residents, drivers, property owners and people who live in suburbs, especially Scarborough, where the mayor has been pushing for a subway extension."

I suspect if Ford runs in the next election we might see the largest voter turnout in Toronto in a very very long time.

Remember this.  One of his so-called friends from the initial video was murdered.  And also one of them was charged with some sort of extortion.  There's got to be some nasty shit going on, not just a silly mayor smoking some crack
