Mitch Marner: what now?

Does anyone here still believe an offer sheet for Marner is still imminent ?

There was some hypothesizing that teams would offersheet later into the offseason to give respondent teams less time to react.

So far, we've just heard that no team is offering anything in the Marner camp sweet spot of minimal term with UFA cap hits. All that really tells me is that Marner might be open to leaving Toronto but only at an astronomical financial opportunity because he generally wants to stay.

Interesting. I also don?t think we can dismiss the idea that the Marner camp put that rumour to the media.  The timing was certainly convenient when much more reliable sources like Dreger and McKenzie were on summer vacation.

I took at a look at the cap situations for teams around the league, and there really isn't a good fit for an imminent offer sheet. Teams either don't have the space, have prominent RFAs to sign that will take up the space, or are likely to be bottom 5 teams next season and possibly beyond. Unless we see some cap clearing moves start to happen, I'm not worried about one happening.

I never did to begin with, and I think one is even less likely with each passing day.

That and there are so many options out there with players who might even take less. How many out there are saying they're worth AM34 money? Why would a team deal with such a headache of an agent who's delusional and unwilling to negotiate in good faith? I'd rather sniff out Point or Rantanen before Marner.

It?s unlikely any other team (and in this case, other than the Islanders) offer sheets Marner.

Speaking of the Islanders, don?t know what Lamoriello is thinking but looking at the capfriendly site, they wouldn?t even have room to sign Marner at this point unless they shed salary or deftly work their way around the roster.

https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/islanders

They have $8,653,334 cap space.  They still need to sign Del Colle & Beauvillier.  That may take up $3-4M+.  Should they be offering Marner $11M+, they?ll need to be in the $7-8M range in order to be cap compliant.
Even if they were to save an extra $2M ( by way of fewer roster players), there?s still $5M outstanding to find, which would mean trading one or two of their top salaried players ? Boychuk or Leddy.

It?s unlikely any team offer sheeting Marner would want to give out four first round picks.

I don?t believe in a New York minute that Marner is going anywhere...but here.

If those guys and their agents are so reasonable, how come they haven't signed either?

I'm not saying a reasonable agent would sign a contract, I think that they'd be easier to work with. It could be a front, but I don't know if I'd want to work with an agent that pulls a bunch of crap in negotiations that ultimately just make things worse for all parties.

It's not particularly effective if you already know the agent's tactics and are able to keep a level head.

If they're not any more willing to meet on contract terms I don't see how they're all that easier to work with. Beyond that, you seem to be confusing the fact that you don't like what you think Marner's reps are doing with what effect they're likely to have on Dubas and company(and, likewise, you probably have to show your math on anything "making things worse" for all parties).

All Dubas is likely to care about is the numbers he has to work with. So long as none of these big deal RFAs are signed, I think it's premature to say who is "easier" to work with just based on what information filters down to us.

Sure but conjecture is fun and all that  ;)

Twitter's back. I'm going to assume it crashed because this guy called Wayne Gretzky a "below average shooter" while trying to argue how great Marner is:

I wouldn't call Gretzky a below average shooter but he wasn't a world beating goal scorer once goaltenders stopped smoking cigarettes and eating cheeseburgers between periods.

Yeah I certainly get it wasn't the best part of the game but still a heck of a thing to say about the league's all-time leading goal scorer. All in an attempt to prop Marner up.
