Mitch Marner

https://theathletic.com/909290/2019/04/07/this-leafs-season-belonged-to-mitch-marner-and-they-will-go-as-far-as-he-will-take-them/

In the process [of playing the penalty kill], Marner has added another valuable dimension to an already invaluable package. He says because he plays the power play, he knows what frustrates him ? and tries to do the same against opposing players.

?For me personally, it?s just trying to read plays, get back, trying to make it hard on forwards. I?m just trying to make it hard on them getting into our zone and when they do, don?t let them get set, try to pressure them as much as I can, and make it hard on them to make passes to get through me,? Marner said recently.

Marner is so fun to watch and we're basically still on the ground floor of his potential (as we are with Matthews and Nylander).

I wish Tavares killed penalties with Marner. I would also like to see Matthews/Kappi.

I am not sure why people keep thinking this, but Matthews is quite bad in the defensive zone structure. Correction: Matthews is elite in motion, but is very vulnerable when static.

This plays out as great backchecking plays and fancy takeaways because he is fast, strong, and has tremendous hand-eye coordination (shorter stick helps). But when the Leafs need to be set up to break a cycle, he's borderline clueless. His issues are masked by having had good wingers (Johnsson, Kapanen, Nylander, Hyman). To be fair, playing defense as a centre is much harder than playing defense as a winger as you're up against forwards/centres, rather than defensemen at the point, and you're supporting the play in dangerous open space rather than along the boards which have fewer dimensions to worry about.

What he could learn from Marner is to be the type of player on the defensive side that he himself would hate to face.

I think this is an exaggeration.

What if his potential is a single-storey building? Hmm?

He will be a 100+ point player next season and for many seasons to come.  He is more like a condo tower.  Besides, just got a Marner sweater for my birthday so he has to be really good.

If Marner goes full 1993 Dougie Gilmour playoffs I'll accept whatever contract Paul can negotiate

I really want to see more players try moves like this in games.

Don't encourage them to put their iPhones on top of the net and try to hit it...they're already shooting high and/or wide too often. I propose mounting them on top of the netcam casing instead.

That?s the Jason Blake school of shooting

What's not shown is JT handing his stick to Hainsey earlier on. Great play by Marner and all the guys on the ice there.

Impossible to say but he definitely laid it on the line! Was a small but awesome moment.
