Morgan Rielly extended 8 years @ 7.5M

Well that came out of nowhere. Not crazy about that AAV, especially for 8 years.

I also really wouldn't have just minded waiting on this one. If the team blows it in the playoffs again having Rielly walk could have been a necessary change, both on the team and on the cap.

He's 28 before this contract kicks in so it brings him to age 36.  I mean, his skating will continue to erode as he gets older, I guess that's an issue for further down the line and another management group if they don't win the Cup in a few seasons.

I mean considering what Dmen have been getting lately I think he could get more on the open market. Better to have the asset than let him walk for nothing.

How is letting him walk the better outcome?

Not really comparing these players (although there are some similarities) but I remember very strongly arguing this case with Phaneuf when he signed his 7-year, $7mil AAV extension at the same point of his career. Sometimes this just isn't true, especially in a cap world.

Cap expected to go up at least a mill, and Kessel's 1.2 off the books so 300K for Rielly. 2 Mill cheaper then Jones, Nurse is a great deal. Can always move Kerfoot if need be.

I popped in here to see what I expected to be kudos to the Leafs for signing Mo to a pretty good deal. I'm shocked that this deal
does not have for certain an 8 in it and likely closer to a 9 and if people think he wouldn't have gotten that on the open market
I really believe that's a major error in thinking.

Dubas did well but I guess he doesn't get credit

I genuinely understand the reasons to not love this deal as it looks like Rielly might not be the consistent 60+ point guy we thought he might while playing a solid D at 22+ minutes a night.

That said, if you're not super confident that you have the guy in house to replace Rielly then not sorting something out with him would leave a massive hole in the lineup that you couldn't realistically fill on the UFA market without spending this much money anyway. In light of that, I think it's a fair deal. Hopefully the trade protection isn't too heavy so if you decide you want to make a change you still can.

And, just on a personal level, I like Rielly so I'm good with 8 mroe yaers.

NMC for 6, 10 team no-trade list for 2

Well, there goes that. Don't love that aspect of it but I still think Rielly can contribute a lot.

Are you kidding me?

I don't hate Rielly or anything but he's not the defenseman you put at the centerpiece of the blueline for 8 more years.  I guess if it's a tradeable contract I suppose you can hope that the market keeps going up for d-men.

But let's face it, he's peaked offensively and he's not that great defensively.  Maybe he can transition to a better defensive player but I'm not a fan of this at first blush.

Ugh, just saw the latest posts.  I am totally not a fan.

Tied for the 20th highest cap hit among defencemen next season (and will probably end up lower once some other contracts get signed), which feels about right.

I know people think 2018-2019 was an outlier but the reality is that his last three seasons he's put up points at a 12 goal/60 point per 82 game pace while being fairly solid defensively and a good puck mover. I think it's fair to question whether or not it's the best fit for the Leafs given where they are with the cap but it's very, very difficult to argue Rielly being "worth" the contract in a league-wide setting.
