Someone stated that since he signed for less than he might have received on the open market, he wants to remain a Leaf and that's a good thing, didn't the Muskegoen 5 also want to remain Leafs?

What in the world does that have to do with anything?

It was also assumed that Barrie would get tons of money when he became an UFA, he ended up signing for 3.5 mil. for 1 year, he now is making 4.5 mil. which is less than he made(AAV) in his TO year. Barrie was the highest scoring dman in the NHL last year, he was playing 3 to 4 minutes less than the other high scoring dmen, his +/- was only 4 less positive than the best dman last year, Adam Fox.

Absolutely all of this is either incorrect or irrelevant. Who assumed Barrie would get big money as a UFA?

the dmen that are getting the big $s are exceptional both offensively and defensively, they're exceptional at all times in every scenario during a game. They deserve the big money.

This is also untrue.

The real question should be, is Rielly that exceptional at anything and therefore deserving huge money

He didn't get huge money.

Our big three all signed 5 or 6 year contracts which is exactly in line with what Stamkos, Hedman, Crosby, Malkin, Getzlaf, Perry and many more did on their 2nd contracts. Those guys signed longer terms on their 3rd contracts, just like Rielly did...

Not just those guys but most of the recent big time RFA's too. Makar, Rantanen, Aho, Kaprizov, Hughes...and that's not counting the guys who just signed bridge deals.

Since we?re bringing up irrelevant things and made up stories let me just point out that Rielly just signed for 500k more that Phaneuf did for a contract he signed in 2014.

Also, and I don't care who's sick of me saying stuff like this, it's absolute raw garbage that a popular, talented player who the Leafs drafted has signed a perfectly reasonable deal wherein his talents are fairly valued in order to stay with the team long term and some people are saying it's bad because they think that being savvy sports fans means becoming amateur actuaries worried about whether or not it's the absolute most efficient use of every single cap dollar humanly possible.

Raw garbage eh?  You can still like Rielly and appreciate all the things he brings to the table and disagree that this is the best use of $7.5m in cap space for the coming few years.

The two aren't mutually exclusive.

He's saying the system (hard cap) that forces fans to think like that is what's raw garbage.

"Forces" might be a bit strong as you can try to enjoy the game without worrying if every single move your team makes is best business practice but, yeah, that was a criticism of the environment.
