Leafs acquire the rights to Chris Tanev [signed 6 years, $4.5mil AAV]

What a stupid league.

They already put strict rules in place to severley limit the effects of adding "fake" years.

I'm assuming the Tanev deal is done and they're holding off on it until tomorrow to generate "buzz"

Officially done. Glad he's here. Expected a lower AAV for 6 years.

Tanev?s deal is technically valid; as his rights holder, this is an extension. Woll?s may be valid too as an extension and not a UFA deal?

Immune to cap penalty since we signed him before age 35.

What is a 35-plus contract?
A contract is designated a 35+ contract if the players age on the first year of the contract is 35 or older (as of June 30 prior to the year of the effective contract).

35+ contracts that are two years in length or longer and:
1. Have a signing bonus in the 2nd or later year, OR
2. Are front-loaded
Will not benefit from a reduced cap hit regardless of the players location of play, termination, retired status, or a buyout. This rule was introduced by the NHL to prevent teams from backloading contracts past when the player was expected to retire. An exception to this rule is that a team will receive a $100,000 cap hit reduction if the player is on the 2nd or later year of the contract and assigned to the minors

I'm grateful they got one of the top RH dmen.
In the short term, probably the best talent for their needs.
The term is crazy for the physical player he has been but he can retire or reside on Robidas Island - all within the rules of the CBA.

6 years is about the shortest you can expect I suppose.

Since we haven't developed this kind of lockdown d-man since Schenn I think this is a smart move.  Hopefully we get a couple of years of him at close to top form before having him as a Gio-like guy on the 3rd pairing.

Term is nuts, but he's definitely what this team needs in the short term. Rielly-Tanev sounds like a great pairing.

Some of Capfriendly's scouting reports have him trending to a 5th defencemen, so that's a little concerning.
