3x7*. Had to be on the team by the deadline to be eligible for 8.
Apparently not???

He's wrong.
I thought so as well. Always thought the trade deadline was the latest.

Is this a new rule? I remember when Edmonton signed Hyman they were trying to acquire his rights so they could sign him for 8 years but Dubas didn't agree with what they were offering so didn't trade him

Actually it might have been a sign and trade but they couldn't agree

Yeah I don't really recall the rumours but that would only have been possible via a sign and trade even then.

Yeah and Dubas wanted a decent pick to do the sign and trade. I kind of remember him saying, or maybe it was here people were saying why save them cap space if they're not giving you anything to make it worthwhile. They'll be using that space against you in the grand scheme of things.

riiight...
We all know it's lip service. I think the Leafs know exactly what he wants and Tanev will be signed tomorrow.

Oh yes actually I do remember it that way now.

Giordano, at 40, is the oldest player in the league. No one would seriously think even a 5 year term was on good faith.

70 NHL skaters played until they were in their 40s, 32 players to age 41 or more.
7 year deal for Tanev taking him to 41 is a stretch but isn't completely indefensible.
Maybe it is a 6 year deal to age 40 and they can't really say anything.

Only four skaters have made it to 45 so a 5 year deal for Giordano would really raise eyebrows.

As long as the contract complies with the year to year variablity rules, it should be accepted by the NHL.

Those rules are put in place to limit how much adding years at the end of a contract can lower a cap hit.

It wouldn?t surprise me if Treliving didn?t know this as well.

He is aware.  He mentioned it in the press conference.

Not yet. Tanev can't be the only D man they get.

Sorry, realized my post was unclear. I was referring to Tanev. Some are suggesting an 8-year deal. He turns 35 late this year, which would make him 43 at the end of the contract.

It doesn't matter if he signs for 7, or 8, or even for 4, 5, or 6.  His to-do list is shorter.

Year 1: Make Rielly happy again; they lead Leafs to Cup.
Year 2: Start molding Danford into Tanev II.
Year 3: Finish molding Danford into Tanev II.

He's not eligible for an 8yr deal.
7 years from now when that max length deal would end, as he is 34 now, he'll be 41.

If they're worried at all, they can do it over 6 years which probably gets him down close to $4 mil/yr (if they don't run into a tax hurdle ...). Since he's not staying in Tx, and he's already earned $40 mil, maybe he's past that hurdle and wants to finish his career at home ...

Tomorrow is going to be an interesting day ...

Tanev got to 20 mins/game when he was 24

You probably need to add about 3 more years for Danford's development - when he's 24.
He might help in a 5-6 role before then.
Often takes young dmen until they are 25 years old to fully develop.

His destiny may be as a pawn in a trade to help contend during Matthews window.

I admit he's a shiny new toy at the moment, but as of right now I hope he stays with us.

This contract should be announced today; otherwise, he won't be a Leaf and will test free agency on July 1. I expect them to make an announcement later today.

Thanks for clarifying. He'll actually be 42 at the end of a 7 year deal, but that's beside the point.

Playing to 40 is rare. And given he's a physical player, I'm quite concerned his play is going to drop off a cliff fast.

Definitely going to be interesting. If he's signing to a reasonable number and term, I'll be ok. I hope they're going after someone else more aggressively though.

He's going to be expensive, but Pesce would be my #1 target.

My guess is that we are going to see RHD sign for outrageous numbers in the next couple of days - much higher than is being projected.  Maybe take the high side of the projections and add 25%.  There are too many buyers with too much cap space for the first time in years and not enough D to go around.

Was hoping the Leafs would sign Tanev to help bring an element to the D the team has sorely been lacking, so this would be a solid first move for the off-season.  Here's hoping the term and money are reasonable.
