Morgan Rielly

Corey Pronman ‏@coreypronman

Rielly's something else. Upside through the roof.

Nice to have a prospect people are fawning over.  8)

EDIT: And now McKenzie gettin' in on it.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

As only team to not make playoffs since last lockout, TOR fans could use some good news. Here it is: Morgan Rielly. Outstanding.

So what if he comes to camp (if there is a camp) and just dominates? What then?

Send him back. For the love of Christmas. Send him back.

But honestly, it will come down to how he handles opponents far older than him and more physically mature. He's a strong kid - gets knocked with the typical 'offensive-dman-who-isn't-physical' stereotyope that is quite incorrect - but vs. men it could be a different story.

They need to let him dominate the WHL, go to the WJC's and dominate there, then bring him up next season.  I think they bring him to NHL camp but only for a taste of what it's like.

See, that's where I was at pre lockout (and I still may be.) Obviously these weeks/months are serving him well. I just think he's going to make the decision (whatever it may be) an extremely difficult one.

I think it's the kind of thing you take on a case by case basis. I know fans hate hearing things like this but it's not something we can really be informed about without knowing Rielly and what he's like. Some guys handle the immediacy well, some don't. I don't think a blanket policy works.

I have enough faith in Burke that he'll make the best decision for the long-term future of the club.

edit: As adroitly pointed out by the board's very own Potvin29, the above should probably be "I have enough faith in Burke that his decision will be based on what he thinks is best for the club in the long term, rather than the short". Whether that'll be the right decision is anyone's guess.

Yeah, that's probably the best way to handle it.

What could be the exception for Rielly is that he's getting this 2+ month stint in the WHL to get his game back in shape and see how good he really is doing.. which is pretty freaking good.  Rather than just a camp to make a decision, the Leafs get to see him in this extended audition, which if they did decide to keep him would make me feel a bit better about it.

Exactly. One advantage of this lockout.  :-\

More than that, let him spend next year in the AHL.  No matter how good he looks.  I think this is even more important for an offensive dman than for a stay-at-home type (i.e., I didn't object to Schenn sticking).  A year of seasoning at the pro level will make him really ready for a good NHL career.

He's actually only 18 so it's either NHL or OHL for at least the next two years, no AHL till he turns 20 I think.

So having never seen him play live, who's style is he compared to?

Brian Leetch.

not kidding.

2/3 of Bryan Leetch would be sweet

He has the ability... time will tell if he has the career.

Also, it's as much about Leetch's defensive style as it is about offensive.  Leetch had the ability to strip opponents of the puck with relative ease, take 2-3 steps and exit the zone with a rush or a quick, perfectly executed pass.. That is Rielly.  Similar even down to his size & frame.  Leetch wasn't huge but he was wide and sturdy, and strong.

OK, thanks.

BTW, that is the dumbest rule ever.  Once you are drafted, you should have the option to go right into minor pros.  Good prospects today are ready for it.

It makes sense but then CHL teams only keep their top players for about half the time that they normally would, and they lose out on them in the prime of their junior careers. So good luck convincing them to agree to that.

Why would they get a say?

He must have had a heckuva game last night - Team 1040 radio in Vancouver have been raving about him all day. The last time they raved about a Toronto player was...never...(unless you count the courting of Sundin.... :P
