Wow... How many of you are brain washed by Burke's crap? How could he possibly have turned down a good deal for James Reimer?  Either there was never such a deal to speak of or Burke is a complete fool

To be fair, he didn't say it was a "good" offer...

Here's a question for all of you watching TV in Canada: what, exactly, are the trade deadline shows talking about right now?  It appears only one trade has been consummated so far today.

So much filler. So much. I've stopped really paying attention.
Don't forget - one of them did have that fascinating story about the Andy Bathgate trade from 40-some odd years ago...riveting!

Not to be a jerk but if you listen to the interview he actually does say.. "It was a pretty good offer too"

Hmm...couldn't have anything to do with trying to Reimer his confidence back at all?

I'm gonna go along with Ray Ferraro on TSN and say Burke might be playing some poker here with other GM's right now. There still may be a deal in works for Toronto.

Poker might draw bigger ratings than this years trade deadline if things don't pick up soon

The best way to do that would be to not have your coach throw him under the bus to cover up his horrible coaching "skills"

What else is he supposed to say to keep people tuned into this boredom spectacle they spent so much money on?

They might have to consider changing trade deadline day to trade deadline hour for next years broadcast.

Bob MacCowen might be wrong about a lot of things but he is dead on every year about this deadline non sense.

But then how will Marty McSorley get any love from the guys having lunch at RealSports?

In that case, looking from Burke's perspective, Gus probably isn't resigning in the off-season.  Let's say you trade Reimer for a "good" offer (say, a 2nd round pick)...where does that leave you in the off season?  The only two UFA goalies that are even mildly intriguing to me are Harding and Montoya, and neither of them are really proven either.

What if you can't get sign either of them?  Then you're looking to pick one up via trade.  Then you're getting bent over by other teams because you have no goaltending so are probably going to have to pay through the nose for one.

Reimer's value may not be much now, but unless you have another goalie coming back like a Bernier or Schneider, he is worth more to his team as a backup than he would be through trade.

Does trading Reimer makes the Leafs' goaltending better now? No. Does it make the team better now? Since the return was likely a draft pick or an okay prospect, no. Does it make them better in the future? Well, it leaves them with no goalies with NHL experience signed for next season and brings another maybe into the organization, so, again, I'd say no. Yup, clearly, Burke is a complete fool.

I'm a little surprised in that if this deadline is a sellers market, why doesn't Burke trade away a few of the surplus defenseman while the prices are so high?

Because all the scouts are at the leafs' games and see how they play.

Probably because other teams are after the young ones on cheaper contracts and with upside.. the same ones he doesn't want to trade.

Well so much for wondering why not. Aulie has been dealt to T Bay.
