I'd look at signing Ott and call it a day.

Hope for the best/worst and have a fire sale at the deadline if things aren't going well.

Komarov is already a better version of Ott.

There are better options out there than Ott. The Leafs need more help on the penalty kill, not more practice - and Ott is pretty consistently among the leaders in minor penalties taken. He kind of cancels out his PK benefit with the amount of time he spends in the box.

kkkkrazy trade ideas now that the UFA dust is settled a bit.

1. Lupul for Mike Richards.

Improves the team down the middle. Good two-way "compete" guy who can probably revive the offensive game out from under LA's centre depth.  Kings could use a winger in return.  Both similar injury risks. Contracts are a wash for 4 years.

2. Kadri & Reimer for Evander Kane +?

With a centre deal above (or below) done, this becomes possible. Kane and Kadri IMO have very similar upside and similar focus issues at times. Kane's size and tenacity would be a big add on the wing.  Salary is a concern but next year Kadri likely jumps to Kane money anyway.  Reimer goes home.

3. Phaneuf for Pavelski

Addresses a need for both teams. Leafs will have to find a way to fill the Phaneuf void by committee, however Robidas coming in eases the concern over a move like this.

4. (not my idea, but) E. Staal & J. Staal for Kadri, Bozak +?

Assumes Carolina goes to full rebuild.  Salary savings for the 'Canes is huge, plus I think Kadri for J. Staal is a kind of lateral.  Bozak can be a serviceable replacement for E. Staal. Prospects or picks added in (not our 1st in '15)

Leafs would then be Staal/Staal/Holland down the middle. (or add Richards in there if deal #1 happened) and holy crap would that ever be a dramatic difference.

Who are the better options?

I didn't necessarily mean to sign him to take a run at a championship. He's been a captain and has experience plus he's tradable come the deadline when we're inevitably out of the playoff picture.

Fiddler, Handzus, Mueller, Legwand (depending on price and term), and there are probably some reasonable trade targets out there, as well. The team shouldn't be looking at guys who might be tradeable assets at the deadline. They should only be looking at guys that make the team better. I mean, if the idea is that the team isn't going to be very good any way, why sign anyone? If that's where the team is headed, give the kids a chance.

I'd love to snag Legwand. I've always wanted him on the team. I would have preferred it 10 years ago when he was in his prime, but better late than never?

Drop Carrick and they could have fit Fiddler in, dammit.

An interesting possibility for the Leafs could be Mike Santorelli. Young centre that had a good year in Vancouver.

He'll be 29 this year, I know it's not 'grizzled' but it's not exactly young either.

Well, all in all, I'm quite please with the transactions of the past few days.

Although I wasn't super pumped with the Komarov cap hit, I would have been disappointed if he didn't sign with the Leafs.

As someone else mentioned, perhaps now Nonis has the cap room to sign Gardiner more long term now...anyone think $4 x 5 is out of the question?

Somebody at PPP looked at the contracts signed by similar defencemen and came to the conclusion that that's about what he'll get. And I'd be perfectly fine with that.

I would approve of a long-term, 7-year deal for Gardiner.  It would be great to get him on a deal like JVR.  Getting him to sign a bridge deal will save some cap space now, but at the expense of 3 years from now when we are more likely to be competitive.

It would be great if we could trade Franson for some futures -- perhaps a draft pick next year.  It is a drag we never have our second round picks.

After the radio interview, is now the time to make a concerted pitch for E Kane?

Potential 40 goal scorer, potential head case.  At this point it is hard to say.  He was hinting at the draft that he would like to be moved to Philly but they have no cap space.  He might be great on the 2nd line to help with the scoring depth.

That's Hockey thoughts on it:

Host: Evander do you want to play for the Winnipeg Jets anymore?

Kane: Well, I think I'm a Winnipeg Jet right now, and, you know, there's been speculation and rumors the three years since I got there. So, you know, we'll see what happens and we'll carry on as if I'm a Winnipeg Jet.

Host: There?s not a yes in there, and some Jets fans might say, why doesn?t he want to play for us? Or why isn?t he absolutely fully on board for playing for us?... you?re shaking your finger at me.

Kane: I?m training hard and getting ready for this season, and last summer I didn?t have a full year of training due to some surgery I had, so I found it really important for me to start training early and get myself in the best shape possible for this season. So that?s my focus."

I have the feeling he wants to play in a large US market.  LA, Anaheim, Philly,Chicago, NY.  I doubt he's interested in playing in Toronto

Good IMO the guy is a circus act. They dont need that here.

If the Leafs could somehow land ROR without out giving up any of the following players, I'd be ecstatic...

Kessel
JVR
Bernier
Rielly
Gardiner
Bozak
Nylander

Anyone else goes in that trade.

I think you misspelled Kadri.

Nope. I'd keep Bozak ahead of Kadri any day of the week. He's just a better fit with that top line than Kadri.
