Bernier for a bowling ball and some brillo pads would be an outright steal as well.

OK, ..... so irregardless of weather we land Stamkos or not, and besides us drafting either Matthews/Laine we still need a goalie for this rebuild to grow with the team and there is two very good young goalies being showcased in the playoffs.  What would it take to get one of them.

TAMPA BAY
Vasilevsky, Carle/Coburn to TOR
Pittsburgs first and Bozak to TB

PITTSBURGH
Murray and (Unwanted Contract Kunitz/Dupuis) to TOR
Their 1st back

Would either of these deals be realistic

I keep hearing we need a goalie.  But why do we need to lose assets right now to get a goalie?  We're not competing for the Cup next season.  So Bernier is good enough for now.  We can continue to give Sparks and Bibeau some experience while they get better.  It is possible to get a homegrown goalie.  Other teams do it.  I think we just need to stay patient here.

However, having said that, I do really like Vasilevsky and not because I have him on the Leafs in NHL16 and he's a stud there.  ::)

Not right now. Until the expansion draft is announced(or if, I suppose) there's no reason for teams to sell on Goalies like Murray/Vasilevsky who are cheap and valuable. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me to see Pittsburgh and Tampa more interested in shopping their Vets.

That said, there very well may be a good opportunity to add a good young backup on the cheap when the expansion draft comes around. Until then there's no reason to go all-in on next year. Let Bernier play out his deal, let the team grow, maybe draft a goalie in the second round and slow play it. There really isn't a rush.

Agreed we don't need the next coming of Cujo right now, keep Knuckles and let Bibeau and Sparks share some time as back up. We have that Finn guy we signed from Duluth in the pipeline as well. I am sure Hunter will have a goalie or two in his sights this year, no doubt.

Where the Leafs are in the standings will matter but Bernier will likely get dealt at the deadline, expansion draft rules may be known by then too, no need to buy any goaltending right now barring theft.

I'd maybe consider an offer sheet for mrazek.

for instance, an offer sheet of 3.6mil will cost a 2nd rounder and it will make detroit have to decide whether they want to invest 9mil in goalies with howard being very difficult to unload and maybe having datsyuk on the books and MIA.

Helene st james who writes for the detroit free press just wrote that they could trade Jimmy howard in a package deal that could yeild giordano or hamilton out of calgary.

and I thought fans and people on this page overvalued leaf players...holy cow.

I'd have to think the Wings would be pretty ok matching that.

I had to check the link and re-read the paragraph a few times to make sure I wasn't missing something. That's nutso.

Would anyone else be interested in Wayne Simmonds?

He is 27 now and has three years left with a cap hit just south of $4 million.

I think he'd be great for guys like Nylander, Matthews and Marner.

I really like that he plays with a chip on his shoulder, almost too much at times, but he can still actually play.

I wonder if you could tempt Philly with the Pittsburgh pick.

I know, they aren't in a spot to be trading picks yet etc, but a guy can dream, maybe there is a player for player deal to be had somehow.

Bozak+Prospect?

I'm pretty sure any trade discussion about Simmonds, if for whatever reason the Flyers decided to move him, would begin and end with either Kadri or Gardiner. And even then, when you look at organizational depth, Simmonds would probably be more valuable to the Flyers then those two. He certainly wouldn't get moved for a centre the Leafs just don't want anymore and a prospect.

They're obviously different kinds of players but that seems like a post-JVR kind of decision.

He's ok.  Would rather keep our assets and grow with them.

I could see Charelli with a lot of interest in Simmonds, especially if lucic doesn't hit free agency. And the oilers are in a much better position to overpay.

How bout Bozak, Lupul, Greening,

3 players without a ton of value but take up ~$12M in cap space between them. What do you think?

I dunno. Simmonds was only second on the flyers in points, with 60, 15 ahead of the top leaf. I'm sure philly would jump at our garbage.

Any good targets out there for a 4 quarters for a dollar salary dump deal? We're pretty tight against the 50 contract limit, especially if we resign most of our RFAs

Looking for a $3M-6M with 1 year left that is under performing his cap hit and needs a change of scenery...

I was thinking Chris Pronger's or Marc Savard's contract initially, but their salaries appear to be super cheap in real dollars now, so they'd be more useful for a budget team getting to the cap floor.

Thomas Vanek is a slightly more expensive (6.5M/41 pts) possibility who should be cheap enough by the deadline to provide some playoff oomph to a buyer if we Babcock/Kadri him right. MIN is in that weird middle of the Western Conference area and could use the freed up cap space for more firepower, plus the infusion of cheap bottom-six ready players in Leivo/S. Carrick/etc.. There's chatter MIN will buy him out (http://www.startribune.com/thomas-vanek-wants-to-stay-with-wild-but-knows-buyout-is-possible/377365631/). He is also Austrian and a former Islander and 30(+)-goal scorer, like our favourite Tank-friend, Stonehands Grabner.

The idea being that the Leafs get what out of the deal? Just Vanek?

Also, and this is sort of unrelated, but are there a lot of teams in that sort of situation where they're likely to need fake cap hits just to hit the floor?

Maybe Carolina?
