Official Armchair GM Thread 2015-2016

A fanpost floated the idea of Lupul for Niemi so the Stars free up room to spring for Ben Bishop in a mutual back scratcher of a trade.

As mentioned above, the Stars have been after Ben Bishop as a way to shore up the biggest weakness the team had last season. With Bishop in net, the Stars are likely a true contender in the West. The problem is, they?re already spending $10.4m on their two goalies. They simply can?t take on Ben Bishop unless they are able to move one of Antti Niemi or Kari Lehtonen.

A Lupul for Niemi trade seems to make sense for everyone involved. The Leafs would save $750k on the cap for each of the next two years while creating a roster spot for a young winger like Kerby Rychel or Josh Leivo. The deal would also solve the Leafs backup goalie problem.

As for the Stars, they have an incredible group of forwards and would be able to shelter Lupul in order to get the most out of him. playing middle-6 minutes on a good team could work well for the winger that has shown the ability to play well when paired with superior linemates. By moving Niemi, the Stars would then be able to fit Ben Bishop onto their roster.

"Solve" seems like a strong word for what Niemi would do for any goaltending problem.

The Leafs would save significantly more against the cap demoting Lupul and signing a cheap back-up and probably get similar results.

Assuming it facilitates a Bishop-to-Dallas trade a Niemi-Lupul swap seems to help the Stars a lot more than it does the Leafs. I'd think about it if there were a sweetener added, but one for one I'd rather just keep Lupul.

Yeah. The Leafs would need to get something of value for helping the Stars shed a goalie like that - not to mention Lupul will quite likely be more valuable to them than Niemi would be to Toronto.

Do they have anything we might want? Their drafting looks pretty grim.

They have draft picks. They have a couple interesting prospects, but probably not ones they'd include in this kind of deal - unless they really value Lupul.

I wonder what Nashville would give to trade Rinne? Not really practical for the Leafs now but still, I wonder.

They don't have a replacement for him, and they likely still see themselves as contending (or, at least, close to), so, probably nothing.

No ( yes ) but I could see them being interested in Bishop for argument.

Sure, maybe, but until they bring in a replacement, they won't be moving Rinne. So, as things stand right now . . .

Still, I'm left wondering what his trade value might be. He didn't have a great regular season, he was decent to pretty good in the playoffs but he's sure not the Rinne of old.

Probably not great right now, but also probably not at the point where the Preds would have to add an asset to rid themselves of him (were they so inclined). They'd likely have to take on a contract instead.
