I recently "stole" my mum's old record player from 1980 - it needs some work sadly, the white RCA cable doesn't output sound, but it still plays through a mono speaker, which is good enough for now until I bring it in for service (or buy one that's been serviced...).

I was walking by a Value Village on the weekend and thought what the hell, might as well check out the vinyl section. A lot of crappy Engelbert Humperdink and second rate crooners, but I found an Album by a band I've always meant to check out: The Alan Parsons Project.

Really good stuff! Pink Floyd/Genesis-y.

Just whatever you do, do NOT buy one of those crappy Crosley all-in-one turntables they're marketing these days.

I don't even know what that is lol. It has built in speakers or whatever?

Yeah and they're just bad. I see a lot of people buying them and they will just ruin the records and sound awful.

Yeah, see I'm salivating over a Technics SL-1000 and a Pioneer SX-950. I also have 14" floor speakers haha

I love the SX line from Pioneer. I've got a 550 and a 750 (iirc the numbers).

Cool! I'm thinking of upgrading from an only Sony receiver

Although I'm not sure the SX would help the sound. How's the 750 sound?

I quite like it.  I won't pretend that I'm the most knowledgeable about receivers, and I think that the Pioneers (at least the SX line) have an overall 'warm' sound, but it's got plenty enough power for me.  Here's the specs on it if you haven't already checked it out: http://vintageelectronics.betamaxcollectors.com/pioneerstereoreceivermodelsx-750.html

So I got my turntable repaired... It was a bit expensive but I checked out ones that cost as much as the repair and they're just shoddy in comparison. Nothing like a late 70s Technics.

My Receiver pseudo crapped out on me recently and I came across a beauty old Pioneer Receiver/Tuner combo that I jumped on. The sound is pretty damned good on it!

Unfortunately I don't think I can embed this properly, but take a looksie!

I was thinking of purchasing one (a Crossley),  but kept hesitating because I
I wasn't  sure of' it's quality.  Thanks for the advice on the Crossley, Potvin.  :)

We still have the Seabreeze turntable somewhere in the house and a box full of vinyl records (no kidding!).

I haven't paid much attention to any of this stuff over the ages.  Which leads me to a question:  How best to clean vinyl (records) without damaging (or mistakenly 'scratching') them?

There's a lot of methods and I haven't found one that I love yet. I'm using the RCA discwasher. It has a solution and brush and runs about $15-20. Not bad but not great. You can also make a home made cleaning solution but I'm too afraid of damaging my vinyl.

I should add that the main issue with purchasing something like a Crosley (aside from the sonic issues because their built in speakers will never sound great) is that you can't adjust the counterweight on the turntable arm.  So unless you have purchased a device to test the stylus pressure, you'll never know how much weight is being pressed down onto the record, and from what I've read of people who have been able to test them, they track far too heavily on the record.  Something like that won't really be noticeable right away but if you're spending money on purchasing records, over time it will damage the records - and then it will affect the sound!

For some people it doesn't matter though, but you should be able to set up a system that will sound better and cost a similar price if you go with vintage equipment.

Yeah, vintage is 100% the way to go if you can find a good dealer. I bought an old 50w Pioneer Amp/Tuner combo for $200 and had my Technics TT repaired/serviced for $150 (with new stylus and cartridge) and the baby just sings now. I've looked at some of the new stuff and honestly those TTs going for $200-250 are just so terrible. You can go to Sonic Boom and try them out, they're just not even in the same league in terms of quality even though you can get a good old technics for $100 in some cases!

Wind and Wuthering is a highly underrated Genesis album.

Also, I found a nearly mint condition vinyl (cover is kind of beat up though) of Chicago Transit Authority for a couple bucks at Value Village last week. Score! I can't believe how inventive some of their stuff sounded.

So stoked to hear the new Floyd album next month. Going to give it the 3 papers & headphones treatment...I just hope I don't grow any antlers afterwards.

With The Endless River just over a month away Gilmour & Mason are starting to do a lot of press. Potvin have you heard "Louder Than Words" yet?
