Saw Steve Hackett play Genesis Revisited at Massey Hall yesterday. Really good show! The guy is a guitar master. Wish they EQ'd the singer's voice better though.

Joe - Nice one seeing Marr! Do you have his new album? He's on one of the tracks on the upcoming Noel Gallagher album, Manchester in the area! How many Smiths songs did he play?

I think he played about 6 or so smith songs - again it's my wife that's the big Smiths fans, I'm more of a casual listener.

I don't have any of his solo stuff, but whatever songs were his that he sang were very catchy. He also sang Iggy Pop's lust for life, which was a little weird.

He also brought out one of the guys from broken social scene and they sang a few songs together.

So it got me thinking that I felt quite ripped off by the Peter Hook concert - so I started looking up videos that concert goers have uploaded, and it was exactly the same experience I had - so this leads me to the conclusion that he can't sing...

That would really annoy me and make me feel like he's really taking advantage of people's nostalgia for New Order.  Not that all acts who made their name in decades past aren't doing that to some degree, but if you're unable to sing the songs it's another story.

Did you watch the video? Am I being too critical do you think?

I've been reading up on Peter Hook, and he comes across like quite the ego centric jerk. Apparently last year, or maybe the year before, he quit New Order, then tweeted, or something, that New Order had disbanded. The rest of the guys were stunned and released a statement that said they're still a band, Peter Hook just isn't part of it anymore.

But you see the arrogance there? If I'm not in the band anymore, then it's not new order anymore, end of story.

Seems like quite the tool to me.

From what I've read following the tour online Lust for Life and How Soon Is Now have been the encores most shows.  He's been bringing up different musicians / special guests based on where the show is most of the tour also. He's a pretty big deal in a lot of guitar circles - easily one of the most influential guitar players of the past 30 years. He certainly made Morrissey bearable for me haha

Oh no, you're quite right, Peter Hook is a giant dick.

Yup those were the encores.

He definitely makes guitar playing seems effortless. He doesn't even look like he's trying. Why he isn't bigger than he is, I don't know.

Like I've said though, I've seen him twice, and was completely blown away by him both times.

I think for casual music fans his input in The Smiths is just overshadowed by larger than life Morrissey. I think the 80's era in which he came out of plays into it also. Any guitar player who is worth their salt knows about him tho especially in the UK. Fender doesn't just give anybody their own signature guitar line...yeah he's a genius on the guitar there's no other way to put it really. John Squire and Paul Weller seem to suffer the same fate on this side of the Atlantic as well.

Funny how opinions vary.. I saw Peter Hook and the Light back in November in bosoton and thoroughly enjoyed each second of the show. I am a way bigger Joy Division fan than new order fan so I was nuts about his first set which was all joy division.. I didn't find any problme with volume etc. Hooky does not have the best voice (definitely better with hitting Ian Curtis Joy Division notes over Bernard Sumner's New order notes) but still loved it. I also just finished his book. Sad he and Sumber are fueding but if you believe his book PH has integrity...

So anyone taken a dive into any of the new streaming music services? I've gotten a month free of the Google Play one and while there are certain nice aspects to it it strikes me as a little buggy and limited. The curated Radio stations, for instance, seem to limit themselves to playing songs by 5 or 6 artists and then just going through their stuff.

But anyone tried Tidal or Apple and like them?

I'm glad you brought this up because I'm thinking about this as well.

As I understand it, with streaming you don't own a file, and so if that's the case, you can't listen to it (or store it in your phone) whenever you want if you're offline...correct?

Yes. That's been one of the other things. My wifi coverage is spotty on my deck so when I'm BBQing I'm either using my data plan or back stuck to whatever I've got on my phone.

Thanks Nik...Yeah, I think that's what's going to dissuade me.

What's everyone's favourite music sharing (file sharing) software these days?

Frank, have you tried Spotify?  Their paid subscription is just a few bucks a month, but it gives you access to music offline as well.  It's a pretty good deal.

I haven't actually used them, but I do know that most services allow you to add a whole bunch of songs to some type of "offline listening" section so you don't need to be connected to the internet to access them.

This year I'm gonna participate in a big international songwriting competition, I can't sing, I don't understand chords or notes, I can't finish a song lyrics wise, but I'm still gonna do it, and in 6 weeks lol :D
