Official Ottawa Senators Thread

Yeah. I still don't think he's a guy that's worth that much. It's just not good value for him.

I think the Orpik contract distorted a lot of things around the league.

My point being going to the papers hoping to swing public favour as a negotiation tactic is a jackass thing to do and won't end well - especially if it is only 300k the two sides are stuck on. If you keep fawning over all things Sens Nik we're going to have to double our official fan population to "2".

Heck, I just cleaned under my couch. Forget fan, I might go straight to owner.

Make sure you go on FAN590 every Monday and complain about how the hockey market in Ottawa aren't a bunch of sheep and won't drink the kool-aid!

There has to be more than one of you to constitute a hockey "market". Hockey convenience store or hockey lemonade stand, maybe.

The sens are making a "significant" hockey announcement, Dreger suggesting it could be a Ryan extension.

Edit: Friedman now reporting a 7x7 for Bobby Ryan.

Edit 2: Dreger says 7.25x7

Does Melynk have Ryan's family locked up in a basement or something?

Also, could we do something like that to get Clarkson to retire?

Wow, I'm surprised.  I thought it was to appoint a new captain.

This is really good for Ottawa.  If anything, it shows that star players are actually willing to remain there.

He only had 48 points in 70 games last season?  Didn't realize it was that low.

He wasn't great during the lockout season, either. 30 points in 46 games isn't bad, but, he only had 11 goals.

Yeah, that's still an 82-game pace of ~53 points and ~20 goals.  So the last 3 seasons he's been at (going backwards) .69, .65, .70 PPG, whereas someone like Kessel (as a similarly aged winger) has been .98, 1.08, 1.00.

Yup. I'm not sure Ryan's capable of being the go-to guy up front, and, now, with Spezza gone and the new contract, he'll really be expected to be. He's a good player, but, he really should be the 2nd piece of a line, not the primary focus of it.

Well, to some extent. Although I think it's just another example of how teams will be willing to overpay to keep players from hitting free agency and players knowing that they can always demand a trade if they want.

Kessel is 1.009 over the last 3 years combined, Ryan .682

I think Ryan/JVR is a pretty good comparison (besides similar playing styles and points, they're also both former 2nd overall draft picks from New Jersey). I'm not sure I'd be psyched to give JVR that contract, but I can understand that Ottawa didn't really have much of a choice. Also, big thanks to Philly for making us not have to make that call for a few more seasons.

Pretty striking to see it like that, same age too.  Kessel's deal is for a hit of what, $750,000 more?

We got lucky on that one... At the time Kessel's deal was signed, the comparables were Getzlaf and Perry (8.25 AAV and 8.65 AAV).  During this off-season, the cap went up and Toews/Kane signed HUGE deals (10.5 AAV).  Bobby Ryan's deal is signed with the increased cap and max AAV in mind.  We are lucky we didn't wait until this off-season to sign Kessel, or he would be closer to 10 AAV.
