Official Ottawa Senators Thread

Why not? It's basically an idiot proof business model. Either he gets an absolute sweetheart of a deal on a stadium by threatening to move which makes profitability a near guarantee leading to an increase in franchise valuation or he can move, get a sweetheart stadium deal in a bigger market and reap the benefits that way. And no matter how poorly you run your club, you get rewarded with high draft picks.

For all the talk of the Walton or Ballmer franchise buys being bad value, I'm still waiting for a team to be sold at a lower price than what it was purchased for.

Melnyk bought the team for around $100 million.  Pretty good return on investment 20 some years later.

The Washington Commanders deal is crazy.  Snyder bought them for $89 million in the late 80's and sold for $6 billion.

That's not quite true re: Snyder. He bought them for 800 million in 1999 but the point still stands for the most part. I mean, he ran that team about as poorly as it's possible to run a team with effectively no on-field success and being accused of everything from racism to sexual misconduct and it was still wildly profitable for him.

The real crazy thing to think about is the value of some of the premium sports teams out there. Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys for 140 million. Now? Who the heck knows. We have no real way of knowing what the Cowboys or Lakers or Yankees might sell for.

Even in hockey terms, if Ottawa are worth that, what of the likes of Leafs, Montreal, Rangers etc

I think with some of these teams the social cache of owning them is so great that it almost doesn't matter what they're worth. For anyone to sell them they'd be signing up from going from a very wealthy and important/powerful/famous person to being a wealthier unknown. That seems pretty unlikely with any of the major franchises out there.

Soccer I guess is the exception because these days to spend with teams like Man City or Real Madrid or whoever I'm not even sure making money is an option.

Ah, sorry.  Not sure where I got that $89 million in the 80's number from.  Maybe it was another franchise, or maybe I just confounded the years and price.

Would you?

Before he was hired by the sens I wondered about the Leafs bringing Staios back into the organization in some capacity. Uhhh, it's maybe a good thing that didn't happen.

Ok, ok, we may have fallen for one of his hilarious pranks here.

Wait. People thought that was serious? They may have to use personal devices instead of those provided by the team, but they?re not that far behind technologically. It?s everything else where they?re a decade behind.

Well, in my defence, it's the sens.
