Zaitsev on waivers?!

Heard a joke at my pickup hockey game this morning.

One of the guys asked if anyone thought that D.J Smith was going to be the coach of the Sens by Saturday.

To which someone replied "I'm just going call him J. Smith until he can handle the D."

Yeah Ottawa's defense is bad. Remember when their head coach used to run the Leafs' defense? Good times.

At this point they should just ride him out.  Fire him/let him go after the season.  Stay in the Bedard sweepstakes and don't worry about a better coach fixing your team and putting them on a run.

Gotta figure he'd be putting up at least as good numbers as Talbot is behind that D. Good for Ottawa, trading away a potential goalie of the future for a mediocre goalie of the present...

I was someone who thought the sens would be able to get a little bit closer to respectability this season, and while that obviously hasn't happened I'm still pretty surprised they're quite this bad. In some aspects it doesn't even really make sense though.

Both of their goalies are performing at an above league average level (Calbot .909 Sv%, Forsberg .908 Sv%, league average .904 Sv%). In all-situations save percentage as a team they sit 15th in the league, directly behind the Lightning.

On specialty teams they have the 7th best ranked powerplay (just ahead of Dallas and the Leafs) while on the PK they sit 17th, not great but also not disastrous.

Up front they have 2 guys who are producing at PPG levels (Tkachuk's on pace for 94 points, while Stutzle is at 82 points). Giroux and Batherson are both at around a 70 point pace. DeBrincat's been doing ok but not exactly as good as he was advertised (22 points but just 7 goals in 27 games). After that they do admittedly look weak at forward, especially with Josh Norris' injury. I still don't quite get why they decided to move Connor Brown so soon. But they still surprisingly have the 4th best CF/60 in the league so they're doing something right in terms of getting the puck on net.

They're defence group doesn't look very good on paper but statistically they've been doing fine. 19th in CA/60 and 18th in xGA/60. Like those numbers aren't really anything to celebrate but considering what they've got to work with it's not bad.

It probably says more about how difficult winning in this league is that you can have a team that isn't necessarily being sunk by goaltending, scoring, defence, or specialty teams and they're still sitting at the bottom of the standings.

I was seeing something earlier in the season about their goal differential being about the same as the sputtering Leafs at the time, but there was a significant points gap. They might be riding some good performances with inconsequential results, and getting nickel and dimed on losses.

Anyway, it's very amusing how jazzed they were about the offseason, so this current state of affairs burns a little more painfully. I agree with L K, in that they should once again be gunning for a lottery pick. At least make the Battle of Ontario less perfunctory.

Ottawa's 4th in the league in points since I basically said "they aren't this bad". And 12-5-2 in their last 19 games.

They're on a good run, but it should probably be noted that, of those 12 wins, 8 came against the Ducks, Sharks, Habs, Blue Jackets, Preds, Sabres, and Wings. They're beating the teams they should have a good shot at beating - others in the bottom half of the league. Regression has hit and they're back to being the middle of the pack team they were expected to be.

7pts out of a playoff spot with a game in hand. Nice to see them out of the Bedard race..

Seriously, they're missing a great opportunity. Anyone in the top 4 is a legit or near-cornerstone piece.

They traded Zaitsev and 2 draft picks for Chicago for nothing in return.

Wonder if they're trying to get Chychrun or maybe even bring Karlsson back?

It?s probably more about freeing up space they were wasting on a player they didn?t really want in the lineup more than any other moves. Can?t be spending that much on a guy who they sent to the AHL for a bit and has frequently been a healthy scratch.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly estimated last month the sale price will be more than $800 million and could eclipse $1 billion.

First bid closing is today.

Melnyk bought the Senators out of bankruptcy for $92 mil in 2003. Not a bad RoV.

I guess Gary Bettman will remain on Anna and Olivia Melnyk's Christmas card list ...
