Official Ottawa Senators Thread

Last night they came back from a 3-0 deficit against Vancouver to win 4-3 in OT. Strange timing at the very least.

The word is that the decision was made before the game, and, well, one game shouldn't really impact that kind of decision once it's made. The decision itself is kind of a curious one, though. He did say something kind of dumb, but, entirely honest and pretty truthful. The problem with the sens is the roster - there's not a whole lot of talent there - only one real 1st line player, and maybe two top 4 defencemen. Not going to be much more than a .500 team with that.

Found MacLean's comments there. So he was basically told on Friday that was was getting fired.

Sorry, I missed this because nobody cares about Ottawa. What got him in trouble?

I missed it to, until I braved the murky depths of HFBoards to find some outside perspective on this move.

"All I know is I'm scared to death no matter who we're playing," MacLean said before Saturday's game when TSN's Chris Cuthbert asked if he'd be more worried facing a hot or cold Sidney Crosby. "Whether it's Sidney Crosby or John Tavares or the Sedins, I go day-by-day and I'm just scared to death every day of who we're playing.

"And sometimes," MacLean added. "I'm scared to death of who I'm playing."

Obviously, it's the last line there that's the problem.

I hate to see good people lose their jobs and I really thought Paul MacLean's doppelganger deserved at least until the end of this year.

Certainly wasn't expecting a firing of MacLean now.  Apparently, management was disatisfied with him on more than one count (besides the oomments he made).

It'll be interesting to see how he does in a new job with a better roster to work with. I think the Adams award is usually a lousy measurement of a coach's work, Maclean won  the award for his team outperforming the talent level on the roster before being the umpteenth example that no coach can do that consistently.

and yet the very media that decides the award seems to forget it ever happened and refuses to learn any lessons.  When they were talking about this the other night on HNIC they were pointing to the new coach in Vancouver as being an example of what the right coach can do in juxtaposition to MacClean.  It's like they had completely forgotten just a few years before they were fawning over him in the exact same way.

Well, I've always thought that the fact coach/manager of the year awards get decided that way, as they do in just about every sport, was ultimately self-aggrandizing on the part of the media. The "great coaching jobs" are used to explain the gaps between predicted performance and actual performance because otherwise the media might have to admit that they might have been wrong about how good a team was at the beginning of the year.

SportsnetTicker: Paul MacLean's firing by the #Sens is the quickest after winning the Jack Adams (109 games) since Bill Barber was fired in 2002 (82 games).

MacLean was an assistant in Detroit before going to Ottawa right? It seems I heard some minor rumor somewhere that the wings might need a new coach next year...

When you say coach of the year award, are you referring to the "mediocre team who got the best goaltending performance of the year" award?  That was the year that Craig Anderson had a .941 SV%

You know, I'd never thought of it in quite that condensed a sense before but looking back on it that's a pretty perfect description.
