Hopefully they get 8 more years of that with Bryzgalov.

Money well spent.

Don't get me wrong.  I don't actually mind Phoenix being in existence.  It's just, that sometimes when you go without winning anything, and then win it all, you create a situation like Dallas or Colorado where the fans then expect success all the time, and stop coming when things go south again.  Granted that tends to happen to an extent in most cities, but Phoenix being a 1-and-done team over and over again/missing the playoffs and then suddenly winning the Cup just creates another Carolina scenario.  I would rather they lose to the Kings, and if they are going to win, do it next year or the year after that, so that you build a stronger regular season base and strengthen the league.

I agree and, for me, the reason I'm sort of rooting against Phoenix of the team's left is that, absent a team I genuinely support winning the cup, I tend to at least want to see a passionate, committed fanbase get rewarded. Only turning up to fill the building during the playoffs is more or less the opposite of that. For me, of the teams remaining, I'd most like to see Kings or Capitals fans finally see a cup followed by the Rangers, then the Devils and the Coyotes last.

LK while it seems fashionable to bash the attendance in Phoenix most of the quotes are just plain wrong.  The Coyotes have more "paid" attendance this season than any of the last 10 I think??  The 10 could be the wrong figure buts it's the best in years.  They give away few tickets these days but still struggle to get the building full on a regular basis.  Most nights that they play a Northern team with many transplants in the desert the building is almost full.  The real problem areas are when they play southern or eastern teams in a weekday game.  And in the playoffs they have given away almost no tickets and the place has been full and rocking!!

According to ESPN Phoenix attendance in 08-09 was 14,875, the year after it was 11,989. This year it was 12,420.

Considering what they've been through, small increments upwards is ok to me. I'm happy for those fans that have stuck it out and especially the players and coaches for enduring as well.

When I think of the years of crap attendance Chicago went through for an original six team with a ton of history, hope of any success for/by the Coyotes fans/franchise seems rightly guarded. It's not just about success either, at least the Coyotes made the playoffs the last 3 years, it's also about whether there would even be a team to have any hope for.

May '09 is when they filed for bankruptcy. Moyes took steps that some argue were attempts to scuttle the franchise to help force relocation. He cut the sales staff. Wrote the season ticket holders telling them they better claim their money now or they wouldn't get a nickel out of the bankruptcy, etc. That was the major factor in the drop of 2,800 tickets/game. Ditto for the luxury boxes and corporate sponsors.

If they ever get this ownership thing resolved, I think it will bounce back quite a bit and if the team stays decent, they'll set attendance records in a respectable economy.

But a section of their potential fan base won't support it with attendance until they're assured the team isn't going to get yanked away. The bankruptcy itself caused significant damage.

That's only attendance Tigger.  I got an email awhile back but can't seem to find it now.  Anyway they gave away a lot less tickets this year and it was the most 'paid" attendance in 10 years.

Really wish Philly and Laviolette had got hammered more by the media for playing poor D and for Laviolette not preparing his team properly, because we all know those would be the storylines in Toronto if our coach had to use his timeout early a half-dozen times because of being down, and if the team gave up 4.00 goals a game.

Fair enough, all I had was the ESPN list. It's a decent sign of support too in spite of the situation.

Yeah like I said before they aren't exactly filling place every night but it has improved a little this season.  I think the NHL could actually help them out by making the schedule a little more weekend friendly.  Especially for northern teams whose fans might just take advantage of a weekend down south and take in a game.

I mentioned something along these lines in the Kings/Blues thread, but I'd love to see the reaction to the Leafs enjoying some playoff success thanks to the play of two young homegrown studs, and then watching them get shipped off in the fashion that Carter and Richards were, only to watch as the two outcasts outlast the "new version" of the Leafs in the playoffs on another team and, possibly, go on to win the Cup.

What would happen to the GM of Toronto in that instance? Probably something right out of Spartacus or Game of Thrones...

Can anyone tell me how Bryz's salary works?  How much actual money would he have been paid this year?  On CapGeek it says salary of $10 million and signing bonus of $5 million. Does that mean he got $10 or $15 million this season??

He earned $10M total this season - $5M up front and another $5M paid out over the season.
