Pre-season: Canadiens @ Leafs - Sept. 25th, 7:00pm - TSN4, TSN 1050

Kincaid robs a gorgeous Marner effort.

There it is, a PP goal by Matthews. No chance by the Habs on anything all night. Kincaid has been keeping this close, but it?s done now.

Pretty disappointed I?m not going to get the Nylander hatty but that?s my own fault for raising expectations.

This was a solid albeit meaningless game. lc9, if he was watching, would have had nothing to say :)

Just one game so there isn?t much to read into this, especially with the Habs looking a little extra hapless tonight. But dang that?s a promising start under the full team depth chart.

Kind of surprised that Sandin only played 10 minutes in a meaningless preseason game especially with Rielly playing 28:41

That's kind of surprising. 5v5, he's in line with Ceci's minutes (22ish). Rielly had nearly 4 min of PP and 1:31 of PK, so that's the difference, as the only D-man in all three phases.

Structurally, the Leafs played their (new) game, and the Habs just either let them or couldn't do anything about it. The neutral zone was free range for the Leafs to rip through with quick short passes, skaters zipping through on foot, or a (more) rare stretch pass springing a winger at the blueline.

On regroups, Leafs D were fast enough on the pucks that they could skate to their own blueline and fire an easy pass along the wall to a waiting winger at the redline corner, who then sprung his speeding centre with a lateral pass, leading to a pretty good chance at entry. The puck always had two Leafs nearby, either to steer a retrieval or to support an incursion up the ice. On the rare occasion they got the puck back, the Habs could not do much more than try to rip long shots from the point and hope for a lucky bounce.

It's just preseason, but there are very positive signs. After the first 10 minutes, the Leafs played hard, fast, and generated waves of chances.

I thought the D was very good.  I am pretty excited outside of the Austen side show which I wish would just vanish as fast as it showed up.
