Preseason GDT 7: Leafs @ Red Wings W4-3 OT

Redemption or not, that was a great play by Komisarek and Kulemin both.

Gardiner also looked right in place in the OT.

Good win for Gus.  I'm comfy with the goaltending going in, we'll see how the duo fares.

I think on opening night the Leafs will dress Phaneuf, Liles, Schenn, Franson, Gardiner and Komisarek on D.

Boy, I don't think so.  I just don't see them playing Gardiner ahead of Gunnarsson.

I think it will sort out like this.

Phaneuf/ Aulie
Schenn/ Liles
Franson/ Gunnarsson
Komisarek

I'm sure they want Gardiner playing big minutes every night. Until there is a trade, I think Gardiner will unfortunately be with the Marlies.

Ron sure didn't like being pushed on Gardiner though, did he? He seemed a little nervous there about that line of questioning. I wonder if they do have a trade lined up, because Ron alluded to the decision being made upstairs also.

When asked about Gardiner, he said the decision has basically been made already because Gardiner has been one of their best dmen. Then when pressed further on that (his own statement), Wilson snapped that they shouldn't speculate ...

Another Ron media moment.

Thought the refs were a little off tonight and the Wings were the benefactor. In spite of that, I thought the Wings outplayed the Leafs some.

He wasn't being committal on it though. It just felt like the right question at the wrong time for him, because there has been some internal dialogue with management and he knew what was going on, but couldn't talk about it. That could be why Dreger and LeBrun are coming out with speculation that something is up?

This drove me around the bend tonight, or did you not notice?  ;D

I think the guy just seemed to want to pry. You have your answer, there's one game left before decisions are even made. Now go and write your damn article.

I thought that Detroit dominated for stretches and that the shots totals 29-19 was indicative of the play.  Toronto can't count on multi-goal games from Mike Brown or, in general, winning many games in the regular season playing like that.

I know it's preseason and it is tough to know how the current effectiveness level translates to regular season play but I'm pretty worried about the Leafs defensive prowess.  They need a very significant defensive improvement over last year in order to have a shot at the playoffs.  I'm just not seeing it right now.

MacArthur has a hearing today for his hit on Abdelkader.

IMO, it shouldn't have even been a penalty. I'm sure some will disagree with me, but there was no elbow anywhere near the head of Abdelkader. it was all shoulder and the refs got it wrong from where I was watching.
