Regardless of the goaltending situation, or whether or not there really is an interest in making any moves this early in the season,  I believe the Leafs are in need of a solid defenceman to help alleviate some of the pressure they seem to be having on the back end. I'd be very wary about trading away Gardiner, but if there is someone that could fill the void, perhaps a Percy or Biggs might be doable.

He suggested Hal Gill in that article!  *facepalm..breaks own nose*

Yeah. Gill is not coming back to Toronto, but some of the others might be a good fit.

O'Brien is a not-as-good Mark Fraser.

Sbisa.. yes please.

Kevin Klein would be amazing but he's not going anywhere I don't think.  Although he's 5th in TOI for Nashville d-men so far.. only 2 games in though.  A right side stay-at-home guy is what the Leafs really really need, IMO.

Gleason is prone to mistakes and can be a little erratic but yeah he would be a good 2nd pairing guy.

Allen or Morris would make nice veteran additions. Cap challenges though.

If he could stay healthy, absolutely. Unfortunately, he's already showing signs of being injury prone, which is a very bad thing for a physical defenceman.

A question,  When can trades be made again?  Or can we trade now?

The only time trades absolutely can not be made is during the Christmas trade freeze, and, in seasons where it applies, during the Olympics. Outside of that, the only time teams can't make trades that impact their active NHL roster is from the trade deadline until their season ends.

Thanks for the clarification, but why do we need to take on another defenseman, when you have some really talented guys on the farm,  Phaneuf is Phaneuf, Franson, Gardner and Ranger will all settle down after Randy reams them some more and Reilly is the next coming of something great. Our defense seems fine at 3 and 0 to me.

This is still a very inexperienced defensive group. Gardiner is still learning the defensive side of the game, Rielly just played his first NHL game on Saturday, Ranger hasn't played in the NHL in four years, and Franson is still trying to overcome inconsistency. That leaves Phaneuf and Gunnarson as the only 2 guys (out of 6) without question marks attached to them. Bringing in one more experienced defensiveman that can provide consistent, reliable defensive zone coverage would be a huge benefit, at least until these guys start to round into form.

My gut says if Bernier keeps his play up, Reimer will be in Edmonton by year's end. Seeing dubnyk's performance last night, I don't see how they can remain patient.

By looking at his career numbers over 2 games maybe?

I thought I said by year's end, meaning close to the trade dead line. That's more than two games.

You said seeing Dubnyk's performance last night you didn't see how Edmonton could remain patient.  And I said they could remain patient by assigning more weight to Dubnyk's career numbers than his poor first 2 games of this season.

Point made. By bringing up the "patience" card, I was implying they might get impatient pretty quickly since they have been bottom feeders for a while now and this year with a new coach, new management things might get dicey quickly if they dont start winning games. edit: and Dallas Eakins know Reimer pretty well.

Howard Berger ‏@Berger_BYTES 26m
I'm told, without detail, #Leafs could be working on trade involving D that will clear some cap space and ensure Morgan Rielly stays.

I wonder who that would involve... Franson or Gunnarsson? Fraser?

Berger? Yeah, alright.

Also, what a generic statement. The Leafs have been working on clearing cap space since the cap was put in.

Report: I can't speak to specifics but sources tell me the Leafs are trying to improve as a hockey team.

This is the same Howard Berger who reported the Leafs were buying out Liles this summer, right? There isn't another Howard Berger out there?

Credibility = 0.
