I admit I don't fully understand the intricacies of the NCAA but it's a little surprising that Knies would have gotten that nomination over his 2 linemates who both outscored him this season. It's possible the awards show some favouritism to say sophomores over freshmen but if it did come down to just merit then that's a pretty good sign of his performance this season.

I had the exact same thought. I'm guessing they lean towards the older options because there's more runway to reward the freshmen later.

Anyway, Knies is a tier below Jimmy Snuggerud (STL) and Logan Cooley (ARI) and older, but surprisingly had fewer PIMs than those two given his playstyle, and narrowly won the goal scoring race by 1.

I saw the Hobey Baker voting a week or two ago. Knies had been second but now Knies was leading. That surprised me. I had to wonder if Leafs fans had anything to do with it. I saw where one could register to vote but I never registered so I do not know if it is wide open. Pure speculation on my part. Maybe that influenced who the team nominated. I don't know the situation well enough but I was also surprised by his team's nomination over the freshmen. I'd be delighted to find out my concerns were wrong.

Okay, I'm seeing Jimmy Snuggerud, Logan Cooley, and Adam Fantilli as finalists for Freshman of the Year, so it seems like they've exempted them from other considerations, even though they're basically the top 3 forwards in the league.

Yeah I was just about to come say that when I realized Fantilli was in the Big-10 as well. Him not being nominated for that despite being the very, very clear leading scorer in the entire NCAA and probable Hobey Baker winner is pretty telling.

Still a nice honour for Knies, but not really one without an asterisk or two.

Fantilli is nominated for the Hobey Baker.
https://hobeybaker.com/VFH/VFH2023-Adam-Fantilli/

I don't know if he'll win it but if he did, why would there need to be an asterisk? Nowhere below does it state the winner has to be the top scorer.

Hobey Baker Criteria...
~Strength of character, on and off the ice
~Contribution to the integrity of the team and outstanding skills in all phases of the game
    ~Scholastic achievement and sportsmanship
~Compliance with all NCAA rules, including being a full-time student in an accredited college or university and completing 50 percent or more of the season.

The selection process for the award is in three parts. First, the head coaches of NCAA Division I schools nominate the top three players in their league and the top three players in the nation. College hockey fans can also vote online at this time?and fan voting can be an important factor in the balloting outcome. Price Waterhouse Coopers tabulates the votes and the top 10 candidates are announced.

Voting then commences for the ?Hobey Hat Trick,? which is a narrowing of the field from ten players to three, from which the winner is selected. The primary voting in this part of the process is by the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Selection Committee, a geographically balanced group of 29 individuals representing print and electronic sports media, college hockey coaches and officials, and NHL scouts. Fans may also vote online for their favorite candidate during this phase of the process.

After the three finalists for the award are announced (?Hobey Hat Trick?), the countdown begins toward the announcement of the award winner in a nationally televised ceremony.

We're discussing Knies being nominated for the Big 10's (the conference in the NCAA that Minnesota plays in) Player of the Year award over arguably (or maybe not even arguably) more deserving freshmen like his linemates and Fantilli.

I was going off CW's last post referencing Hobey. My bad.

All good. Knies' odds at the Hobey are probably fairly slim, even if he is leading in a fan vote.

And to clarify a bit more the asterisk comments is just that the Big 10's "Player of the Year" award should more appropriately be called the "Player of the Year (who isn't a freshman)" award. Still a nice recognition of his season for him to get nominated for.

I don't think he'll win it either but like you said, nice to get nominated. Kind of funny though, Knies was nominated for Freshman of the year last season.

Tverberg could sign a contract with the Marlies to finish the season if he plans on turning pro next season anyway. As mentioned elsewhere, they could use some reinforcements at forward there.

If he's planning on turning pro Tverberg doesn't seem like the level of prospect who warrants burning a year of his ELC anyway.  If he wants to play in the Leafs organization the Marlies seems like a better spot to get a chance to participate in a playoff run and then get a contract in the offseason.

Bobby Mac is BACK! Maybe we see him with the Leafs soon.
