PPP: 1. Auston Matthews

Wild, photo finish for this race, eh.

Matthews is the only prospect in the history of the PPP T25U25 to not move positions on the rankings for his entire tenure. That position also happens to be #1.

When they flipped the draft lottery card over, did you imagine what Matthews might have become? Pre-draft there were accolades about how he'd be an Anze Kopitar-like two-way centre with size, but made sure to pump the brakes a little because these things take time, you know?

He was better than everyone expected pretty much right away (hello game 1). And he has gotten even better with each passing season in spite of some injuries. And he still has room to grow, which is insane to consider, because he is always looking for ways to improve or change up his approach. There's really only one thing left to achieve.

People (on Twitter) have bemoaned that Matthews only signed a 6 year deal, but I think that's sort of a really good thing. His next contract is going to be the largest he'll ever get, and possibly the largest one in the league by raw amount at the time of signing. But the Leafs, if they succeed in signing him, will have him to age 33/34, instead of paying max dollars for ages 34+.

Leafs rookie team is practicing in Toronto today before they play tomorrow

Very easy breakdown of the thought process behind the lineup, applies to forwards and defense
1. Expected point producers | show you deserve a look on the Leafs
2. Secondary scoring | Marlies who need to demonstrate growth
3. Marlies energy line
4. No chance at the NHL roster | Just getting a taste
5. Invitees | Who will stand out amongst peers?

Pontus Holmberg is NHL ready, but waivers exempt, so they're stress testing his ability to be a bottom 6 centre on North American ice

His season with the Marlies ended a bit early last season. I hope he's ok

Interests to see how Fimis does after going undrafted.
Larsen is another interesting guy..he's huge and has a big shot...Seen him play for the Steelheads this past year and he looked good.

Are the Leaf shooters really good or is the Dallas goaltender just rusty?

Lot of baby buds getting first line duties with their respective teams this season: Knies (1LW), Hirvonen (was 3C, now 1LW), Voit, Tverberg (!), Moldenhauer (1C), Miettinen (1LW)

PPP: 5. Nick Robertson

High, high ceiling; tricky to gauge floor. He certainly has the motor and awareness for a bottom six energy role, but is he going to be able to withstand the rigours of the NHL with his frame? He has already been beset with injuries (circumstantial ones) that has delayed his development. His skillset begs for a top-6 offensive role, and there hasn't been a more difficult time in the Leafs franchise to break into such a spot. Fortunately, he plays the position with the lowest threshold of entry (LW), so... there's a chance, if not this season then after Kerfoot and potentially Bunting move on.

Things that can help push Robertson over the top in my estimation:
* judicious application of that motor: knowing when to wait and when to give'r gas will let him apply the most force at the right time. Flying at 100% all the time is a recipe for flaming out mid-season. Dr. Wickenheiser has commented on this previously and it looks like it's starting to sink in.
* skating stride: he's very hunched over, like he's riding a motorcycle; not sure if you can change this at this stage of the game. Ideally, you want a quiet upper body that is more upright (see Nylander, Engvall), while the legs extend through the glide efficiently.
* leverage his playmaking: until his breakout season in D+1, Robertson was known more for his passing; in the NHL, he's not going to be the go-to shooter on any of the top-6 lines. As a smaller guy, there's value in being someone who can disrupt from the boards and feed linemates in the slot. As defenses shift to cover the higher profile threats, it will open up space in return for Robertson to pew pew some pucks.

Hmm how does this look now after a short sample of collected offseason improvements?

So far, I'd say he is applying a lot of what the Leafs have asked of him in improvement (and some new skill patterns).

His skating stride is still pretty hunched, but it's several degrees more upright now, when he's not flooring it. Interestingly, a lot of his scoring plays this preseason happened because he was able to reach a puck sooner due to already being hunched over. It also doesn't hurt that every posture is a shooting posture for Robertson, unlike guys like Engvall who needs everything to be perfectly aligned.

His playmaking was always there, but overshadowed by his shot; it's a lot easier with the likes of Nylander/Tavares too, because you can just put the puck in good space rather than laying it on a tee -- the stars figure it out.

His aggression is a bit more calculated now, and he is targeting better spots to win puck battles: into the hands/stick against which he has a significant size advantage, rather than the defender's body where he is usually at a disadvantage.
Most importantly, he has recognized his primary weapon is manufacturing his own luck and chances through moving his feet.
