Ranking Prospects 2023-24

I know it's just VHL, where shooting ability and tendencies are a bit stupid, but it's nice to see a Leaf goalie prospect playing well!

I'd love to see the Leafs be able to loan him to a KHL team that needs a goalie next season. I don't think bringing him here right now would be the best thing for him, especially since playing time with the Marlies would probably be either very limited or nonexistent. And if it's the latter I'm not sure the ECHL really does his career any good right now.

Hey it's not the Stanley Cup but it's hardware baby!

He definitely needs KHL playing time.

Marlies are sitting on a glut of goaltenders:

Matt Murray, which is an extenuating circumstance
Dennis Hildeby
Kevin Petruzelli
Vyacheslav Peksa

Luke Cavallin - on a Marlies deal

Akhtyamov is also on an ELC and projected to join the Marlies next season.

I can see Matt Murray vying for the role of Martin Jones on a similar 800k weird signing bonus deal if he doesn't just get a 5 year contract with Dubas/Penguins. I think the Leafs medical staff have treated him right and I'm sure he'd love a crack at the Leafs net.

There is little reason to keep Samsonov if Woll is not overtly crapping the bed. Woll + Murray (immune to waivers) to start the year with Hildeby/Petruzelli ready for the call saves a significant amount of cap in a crunch season.

Murray's back with the Leafs. Still listed on LTIR.
Hildeby will be the go to guy for the Marlies these playoffs. I can def see them running with Woll and Murray next season. Unless Sammy is lights out, I don't think he's back.

I think both Murray and Samsonov will go, unless Samsonov steals us a couple of rounds.
The way forward is with Woll and Hildeby next year and let?s hope one or both of the Russian?s give them a run for their money shortly after

I dont think Hildeby is ready. This is his 1st year in NA. Nothing wrong getting Murray on a cheap prove it contract and letting Hildeby cook for the Marlies and be the 1st callup option.

I would hope the team would aim higher than that. Woll is still far too unproven to go into the season without a much more solid partner than Murray.

I think the AHL still has a "clear day" roster day (now called a deadline) which I think was Apr 10th
Murray did not go down until Apr 13th
So I do not think he was eligible for the Marlies playoffs.

When Murray fully recovers, there is a decent chance he'll be an improved goalie over recent seasons.

Woll is under contract for next season.
Beyond that, I'm not sure what they'll do.

There isn't much in the UFA market for goalies that screams get this guy. Stolarz, Brossoit, Nedeljkovic? Pretty thin after those 3.

How many will make it to July 1?

That's why I looked so closely at Murray's chances of recovery.

Same with right handed dmen

Sure. The upgrade will likely have to come via trade, but going into the season with a Woll/Murray tandem doesn?t feel like a recipe for success.

If Hildeby continued his domination in the AHL, maybe they go into next season with that trio with the expectation that Hildeby is NHL ready and can jump in if Murray falters. But that didn't quite happen unfortunately so you can't really place that expectation on him.

UFA goalie market is definitely thin. RFA candidates who might not get qualified also don't see particularly interesting. But a team trying to be a Stanley Cup contender just isn't going to go into next season with Woll and a Matt Murray who didn't play a single game in 23/24. Saving cap space isn't that big of a deal if you miss the playoffs, just ask the Devils.

What if we have Woll/Hildeby and keep Jones around again, as insurance?

No serious Cup contender is going go into the season with a tandem with a total of 36 games NHL experience (including one with zero games), neither of which have started more than 23 games in a season, and an insurance policy that hasn?t posted a Sv% higher than .902 in the last six seasons.

Hildeby might be an NHL goalie at some point soon, but he?s not at the point where you?re penciling him into the opening night roster. He hasn?t shown enough there yet.

KHL hardware. This is projected to be Grebyonkin?s last season in the KHL as he does not have a contract there.
