Rick Nash potentially available

Just so I'm clear, that means Phaneuf peaked at 23?

Yeah, I don't buy that. There is simply a lot of Phaneuf haters out there, due in my opinion to expectations being too high.

Has nothing to do with hating, he's still a good player, just not as high calibre as he was in his first couple years breaking into the NHL.

I share the opinion that he could still be that guy, he had some difficulties, but he's still a top pairing guy from what I can tell.

Do you ever think he'll have another season where he's the second best defenceman in the league (according to Norris voting)?

Maybe, maybe not ( more likely ) but I think the jury is still out on how good he can be. He had a real good year that year, no doubt, but feasted on the power play and had some defensive liabilities covered up by the composition of the team. Maybe I disagree with the notion of what is being implied by that comment as a 'two arena' defenceman, scoring and hitting that is, I think he has the tools to be a much more complete defenceman than he was at the age of 23. I think there's a real chance that his prime is yet to come though whether he gets another close shot at a Norris, I don't know, but I also don't know if that's really part of the criteria or not to judge.

If it's straight up with Kessel, I'd go with Nash - based upon talent and expected years of service. Kessel is going to be a UFA in a couple of years and will command dough pretty close to Nash. I think Nash is the better talent somewhat handily.  I wonder if Kessel's shy personality type is going to want to endure a bunch more years of the Toronto media beyond the next couple. He's American and may decide he prefers to play closer to "home" - wherever he deems that is. Nash eliminates the fair risk of losing Kessel as a UFA for nothing.

I think Columbus could get more than Kessel in return for Nash. How much more is where the debate gets interesting for me.

So if we had to pick our poison, what would it be?

A 28-year old Nash, with a $7.8M cap hit for the next 6 years, who brings a  big, power forward presence but does not fill a hole still left up the middle, who would cost a lot to obtain;

OR

An older Luongo (33) who has 10 years left, but at nearly $2.5M less on the cap, who fills possibly the team's biggest need and whose acquisition alone could propel the Leafs to the playoffs, and would cost less to obtain but likely fades quicker.

If Burke is aiming to go big and one of these two is the primary target, there are pros and cons with choosing one over the other. I'm still not convinced that Nash is the right way to go for this team (unfortunately, pure hockey talent alone isn't the only factor that could be considered). I'm torn daily on Luongo, but if I had to choose one, it'd be Luongo.

I would pick neither...I think there's better options out there..Burke and company will have to find them..that's why they make the big bucks.

From Cox:

For hockey people, sometimes it?s very helpful when tough choices are taken away.

Perhaps that?s the case for the Maple Leafs when it comes to Rick Nash, a player they once coveted. Nobody seems quite certain where the Columbus Blue Jackets sniper will end up if he is indeed traded this week, but the Leafs are convinced that if they ever were on Nash?s short-list of teams for which he would waive his no-movement clause, they aren?t now.

So, apparently, they don?t have to be one of the teams trying to figure out just how much they should give up for a 28-year-old forward who had 59 points last year and comes with a massive contract and cap hit. They aren?t one of the teams chatting with the Jackets as we speak, although that could always change.

Dregger keeps trying to link Nash to the Sens - what's this guys problem? I wish I got paid to drop acid everyday too.

Heard it on the radio tonight that they were linked as well, although the proposed deal seemed a little weak.  Anyways, I think he may end up there.  Lots of things going the Sens way.  Frustrates me to know end that their management team is able to make smart decisions and keep the team competitive.  The Karlsson signing is great, they could sign Schultz as they have the playing time available for him.  The Sens could be hoisting the cup in the next couple of years.  The Leafs will be lucky to even get a sniff of the playoffs in that time.

:-).  What exactly is the trap?

There may be even the possibility of Nash going to Vancouver in exchange for Luongo.  That, of course, would have to depend on if either player agrees to go.  Doubt Vancouver nor Columbus is either on Nash's or Luongo's list.

The Rangers seem to have "the inside track", according to THN.  Sather would be willing to part with Del Zotto and Hagelin, but the Blue Jackets have asked for McDonagh and/or Kreider.

The Carolina Hurricanes would alao like to have Nash, and pair him alongside Eric Staal.

Trouble is, the Blue Jackets are making it difficult for teams with a pursuing interest in Nash by asking for the moon, sun, and the stars , so to speak.

The Rick Nash drama sweepstakes are going to get very interesting, keeping everyone guessing just which team will offer whom, what, and how much.

If I had to choose now, I'd bet on the Rangers first, Caeolina second.

TSNBobMcKenzie: Teams interested in Rick Nash say asking price remains high and there's no sense out of CBJ anything is imminent. Likely to be post-July 1.

After checking various rumor sites the suggestion was that leafs were on Parise's short list. I have suspicion that Kessel would go the other way for Nash. Wonder about Kessel. Komiserik, one of Colburne/Kadri, Macarthur for Nash and Mason.

I . . . um . . . no.

DarrenDreger: Not sure who's reporting...maybe @Eklund , but Brian Burke couldn't be more emphatic in saying Toronto is NOT in on Nash.  As you were...
