Rick Nash to NYR

Aportzline: #CBJ also sending 3rd pick and minor-league defenseman to #NYR in Nash trade. Told defenseman is not David Savard.

And, after months of dithering, Blue Jackets make a crap deal for Nash. Go for volume rather than quality. Dumb

Is he new? this is how these deals always go.  3-4 parts for 1 part.

Teams rarely ever get "equal" value when trading a disgruntled star away who limits their options to a handful of teams.

I don't. I think they made a very strong hockey deal here, and I'd say they're a better team now than they were a few hours ago.

Sure, but that speaks more to the Rangers depth in terms of quality NHL calibre defencemen than it does to Erixon as a prospect. He was still one of their best prospects.

I mean, it's a qualitative argument, but even if so they still have McIlrath, they still have Skjel and they have a terrific young NHL defense. That's an affordable piece to give up.

Sure, but that's a different argument. You said they didn't give up any of their better prospects. They did. They're just in a position where they can afford to do so.

Crap strikes me as unfair. They got three guys who could be significant contributors to their NHL team next year. They weren't going to get a ton else. Remember when we made fun of them for asking for a lot more?

I think it's an ok deal for the Blue Jackets, I just think it's a great one for the Rangers.

It is. I shifted it slightly so we could avoid another round of "Yes he is" "No, he isn't" but, you know, I'm game if you are.

I agree with this:

170 days of waiting for the right deal and this package is the best howson produces. I am really surprised. #snet

I don't know if I'd call this a great deal for the Rangers. It's not a bad deal. They add a quality player without sacrificing top level talent, but, their depth takes a hit, especially down the middle. They probably come out ahead, but, I'd say Columbus does as well.

No... I'm assuming Cox means they should have got higher end parts. I think he's right.

I don't know why. Nash had a limited market both by virtue of his cost, his cap hit and his NTC. It seemed like he was insisting on going to places that weren't going to have pieces like a Huberdeau or a likely top 5 pick.

Yeah, I'm with you too... I think it's a clear win for the Rangers.

If this exact same deal had been made last summer, people would have been applauding Howson for getting this return in a difficult situation. Howson wanted young, NHL ready pieces. And, with that in mind, he received a pretty good return that, I'd say, makes the Blue Jackets a better team. At the end of the day, that's all you can ask for in any deal.

Yeah, I don't think that's debatable. I just think, you know, when your star forward demands a trade you've already lost the deal. The only question afterwards is how badly you get beaten.

All things considered? Columbus did ok. They weren't going to get Brayden Schenn or Logan Couture. Holding him to that standard isn't fair.

If you factor in the other assets they get by moving other pieces now they have added some bodies then yeah, I suppose it's not so bad. - I just really like this deal for the Rangers though.

looks like they got nothing substantial in return for Nash.

As I said before - 2 guys who can be top 6 centres, a top defensive prospect and a 1st round pick. That's pretty substantial. They weren't going to get another All Star in return. Trades very rarely play out that way.

We'll have to disagree on that Busta.

Seems like Sather let Howson pick what he was willing to give up.

Because of circumstances, Boston got a better return for Kessel.

Busta, you do have to admit that it's sort of underwhelming.  Realistic, yes, but given all the talk this site's patrons engaged in - "Sure, it would be great to get Nash, but the acquisition cost would be too much" - seeing what the Ranger's actually paid to land him sort of makes me wish the Leafs could have been part of the game.

Its cap neutral for next season, assuming Erixson would have been on the NHL roster in NY next season.

They're somewhere around 58 mllion now, so they do have some flexibility to try and adress the centre depth issue.

Well, short-term, it favours the Rangers, but, I think part of it is that they got the big name, which always makes things seem better. Long-term, I think this is better for Columbus.
