sens vs. Maple Leafs - Feb. 10th, 7:00pm - SN, TSN 1050

Rielly hearing is tomorrow at 1pm in New York

Perron cross check looks worse
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrL5_6aMxRk&ab_channel=ToughCall
The player Perron hit, Zub, was completely innocent of the Larkin injury

Here's the ruling in that case
https://media.nhl.com/site/asset/public/ext/2023-24/PerronRuling.pdf

I suspect Rielly's suspension will be a little less than Perron's.

Rielly will lose $39,000 for each game suspended

Rielly could use a little break before the stretch anyways, so whatever.

Yes, but like recovering from an injury, there is a potential for a compensation injury as a result. Rielly is one of the more physically and cardiovascularly durable d-men on the team. It?s everyone else that now needs to soak up 25-min in some fashion that will pick up more wear. Definitely need to sit and cycle them more frequently once everyone is back (see Lagesson lagging).

Violence against others is not ok, even when your feelings are hurt.  NHL players and coaches are horrendous role models in this respect.

My girlfriend said some mean things about me so I punched her in the face and broke her arm.  Her fault.  She shouldn't have said it.

This take is so confusing. Why are you conflating actual purposefully violent sports that consenting adults engage in vs. spousal abuse? All MMA fighters should be given life sentences in your world.

I probably shouldn?t have used such an extreme example.  You are right - it is different than spousal abuse because the NHL has normalized fighting. (In my opinion, it is unethical for the NHL to have done so.)

Fighting and attempting to injure is not part of the game of hockey.  The incident is against the rules and happened after the game is over.  But the NHL promotes the idea that violence is a just response to having one?s feelings hurt. It is too similar to the kind of thing that happens outside a bar at 1am.  Men defending their honor with fists.

It seems somewhat different than MMA where the ?game? is fighting (as opposed to the game isn?t fighting but you get made and attack someone.). Having said that, I don?t at all like the notion that people enjoy watching others get beat up, but it?s a little different.

The more I think about the whole thing, the more I believe Rielly will definitely get a bit of a break, but the book won't be thrown at him.  3 or 4 games.

I'm genuinely unsure if there's ever been an in-person hearing done that resulted in less than 6 games. Maybe, with a super convincing case, Rielly's camp can get it talked down to 5 but that feels like the minimum really.

It?s rare, but not unheard of. Last time I can find was Kulikov in 2015, who only got 4 games after being offered an in-person hearing.

If Perron's 6 games is the benchmark:
Both crosschecks were deliberate/intentional
Neither crosschecked player was seriously injured
Both occurred well after the game play was dead.
Both seems to have the receiving player get their arm up to deflect some of the blow

Rielly has a mildly better record on previous discipline. Perron had one infraction
The player Perron crosschecked was completely innocent. Greig arguably provoked Rielly.
Perron's crosscheck seemed more forceful than Rielly's

Ignoring that it happened in Toronto, I'd guess 4 games is the best they could hope for. 5 games seems more likely. NHL suspension discipline has been so erratic over the years, I wouldn't bet a lot of dough on those projections.

Why wouldn't they have done a virtual meeting in the first place?  Especially for first time offenders.
Not like Jack the Ripper who needs to be on the carpet.

Because Rielly requested it to be in person.

It could have been worse ...
That guy got 17 games - should be out of the league

Is this true? This is the first time I have read that Rielly requested it be in person.

Yup

It?s notable Rielly elected to take the NHL up on its offer of an in-person meeting. He?ll travel to New York with his agent (J.P. Barry of CAA Hockey), members of Leafs management and representatives from the NHL Players? Association to state his case.

Since the COVID pandemic, players have had the option to conduct ?in-person? hearings remotely via Zoom and many of them have opted to take it, including Detroit Red Wings forward David Perron when he was suspended six games for cross-checking in December.

Rielly will apply a more personal touch.

From the athletic

DOPS makes the initial assessment. The hearings are either over phone/zoom (which limits the suspension to 5 games or less) or they can offer the player the opportunity to have an in-person hearing (which opens up the suspension to be more than 5 games). If a player is offered an in-person hearing he can still say let's just do it over zoom, and that obviously doesn't change how many games DOPS can give them.

Rielly initially took the in-person option that DOPS offered but obviously because of weather had to settle for zoom. Regardless, he can still be suspended for more than 5 games.

Ah yes. He was offered an ?in person? hearing which relates to the potential length of his ban but in person hearings are generally held not in person.

He did, however, actually opt to have his in person hearing in person, rather than over video conferencing. But cos of the weather he?s now not having his in person hearing in person, but over video conferencing.

Not sure how reliable that is

He didn?t post it from inside a laundromat or the back of a bathroom

DoPS didn?t want the smoke from Shanahan appealing to independent arbitration. 5 games and under is Gary Bergman level appeal.
