sens vs. Maple Leafs - Feb. 10th, 7:00pm - SN, TSN 1050

He went to far on the hit, and will pay for it. I think a 3 gamer should be fine. But it's a leaf so expect a min of 5 games.
It's an in person meeting so it'll be minimum 6, given that Parros hates the Leafs I'm predicting 8-10

NHL.com: Rielly of Maple Leafs offered in-person hearing with NHL Player Safety
If the infraction might require a suspension of six games or more, the offending player is offered the opportunity to an in-person hearing. In this case, the player remains suspended until the hearing takes place. If the player waives his right to an in-person hearing, the hearing will be conducted by phone.

He's suspended immediately.
It might be 6 or more games suspension.

Currently in a wildcard position, if they were not already, losing their top dman, they're probably in a battle for a wildcard berth now.

If Giordano (lower body injury) & Timmins (illness) can't go:

McCabe Brodie
Benoit Liljegren
Lagesson Lajoie

Half of that D, along with both goalies, cleared waivers (no team wanted them for nothing) this season.

Crazy.

Ladies and gentleman, the Shanaplan in all its glory. Not exactly how I envisioned the lineup looking at this point back in those heady days of 2016, when all things seemed possible. But I guess when you give half the salary cap to 4 forwards who are all style and little substance, then trade off young assets in premature attempts to win playoff rounds...this is what you get.

As for Rielly...the cross-check seemed a little less severe than the one Perron (I think) got 6 games for, also didn't seem as bad as Anderson's hit on Laine that got 4. So I would think 3 games is about right. But it's the Leafs so anything is possible. Would not be surprised if it's 6.

I find myself wondering if Rielly hadn't gone after Grieg, would any other Leaf who was on the ice have done anything, or would they all have just skated meekly back to the bench. That is a bigger concern to me than how many games Rielly gets.

This is why I had no issues with Rielly's response.  The crosscheck to the head was reckless, but it's nice that someone showed a pulse out there.

Once I saw Greig wind up I was awaiting for someone to take issue with it.

There's also video of the stick riding up Griegs arm, so I think it's possible he wasn't intending to get him that high. He let's up on his left hand. Not saying he should've done it but full speed heat of the moment makes it look worse than on second review. 3-6 games I'd say. Next time just give him a good check or just take the instigator and be done with it.

He made a big mistake cross-checking the guy in the head.  As he's a Leaf, he'll pay double or triple for it.

Like cw said, it may be emotional payback but it could cost the team a playoff spot.
I doubt that. He's a loss but they did just fine without him. Last year they went 14-2-1. I still have zero issue with his response and the players will also feel the same.

maybe a good time for Treliving to swing a Dman deal...

He's in a really great negotiating position ... [/sarcasm]

Might be time to see if Niemela can run a 2nd NHL PP and use 7 dmen

They may have to go with 7 D while he's out. I think Liljegren should get a shot running the PP.

Who else do they have?

Giordano, Timmins & Rielly may be all out.

Liljegren & Lajoie.... ?

Brodie (used to in Calgary)? McCabe? but they need those guys for ES & PK ice time
Benoit & Lagesson are not options.

Liljegren was an offensive D man when drafted and he does have a good shot. They can't use Brodie. Maybe they go with 5 forwards??? Throw Willy on the point and us maybe Robertson as another shot option. Not sure. I bet we see some kind of different PP set up in tomorrows practice.

Violence against others is not ok, even when your feelings are hurt.  NHL players and coaches are horrendous role models in this respect.

My girlfriend said some mean things about me so I punched her in the face and broke her arm.  Her fault.  She shouldn't have said it.

I thought Liljegren was a given. Among the 'normal' top 6 dmen, he's #2 in PP TOI/game

When Timmins or Giordano return, they can take PP shifts.

With Timmins just being sick I think there's a decent chance he's ready to play Tuesday. Also the Leafs have gone with a 5 forward PP1 before, this might be a good chance to put Bertuzzi out there with the big-4 as a net front guy to see if that gets him going a little.

I think the Rielly thing is just an example of how following sports is less fun as an adult. As a kid I would have been "Yeah, play stupid games and win stupid prizes. Don't disrespect the other team. Eat it, sucker" and while I still kind of feel that way emotionally, logically I know it is neither a mature response nor a good one if you care about the team, you know, winning games.

Doesn?t guarantee it?ll be 6, just opens the option. Of course, given the history of discipline in this league, who knows? Random number generator is getting fired up.

This take is so confusing. Why are you conflating actual purposefully violent sports that consenting adults engage in vs. spousal abuse? All MMA fighters should be given life sentences in your world.

Sums it up.

True, but in most cases the outcome here probably isn't what would've happened if you re-ran that scenario multiple times I don't think. I think at most there's a cross check to the body, there's a scrum and the game is over.

I have zero problem with Rielly feeling that it deserved retribution. It was an a$$hole thing to do and I'd expect a Leaf to receive a roughing up if they did something similar. The crosscheck to the head was definitely too much though.
