So the debate begins: Matthews vs. Laine

I think one of the really exciting things about Matthews is that he's one of the first really elite cases of Hockey getting the sort of US born athlete that they wouldn't have gotten 10 or 15 years earlier. It's always sort of that great what if of what the US hockey or soccer programs would look like if athletes like Mike Trout or Julio Jones or Russell Westbrook were funneled there instead of the more popular American sports and Matthews seems to maybe be the first look at that.
There've been some exceptionally good American talent though.

This explains a good deal about Matthews' otherworldly handling and anticipation.
Thanks for that article. That got me excited, in my pants

There have but mostly guys from a 50 mile radius around Boston, Detroit or the Twin Cities. Expanding the talent base could be really exciting for the league.

This was my personal favourite takeaway from that article:

At 16, Matthews played with the under-18 team and produced nearly a point a game. He was doing things with the puck Granato hadn?t seen from a player that young. The veteran coach began to believe he had one of the best American players ? ever ? under his watch.

[More] than a month before the lottery balls bounced, Filion had a conversation with his former charge [Matthews] about where, given his druthers, he might want to start his NHL odyssey. ?He said Toronto and Arizona,? Filion recalls.

So he has no issue playing in Toronto. Next!

This is why I am on Leafs forums. Best way to get the whole story.  :)

That was intense and makes me even happier we are getting him.
