Thanks. Listening now, good interview so far.

Love the ending with them asking Burke if he can make a significant deal, and his replies are "Yup".  SOMETHING IS COOKING!

Its going to be a fun jan... ;D

I haven't been this excited about the Leafs since the days of the playoffs.  Man I long for a playoff series this year.  It's so close yet so far.

Quite like Burke and Cox been in the same room together.  Burke is a quote machine.  Love it.

I find it funny how Cox seems all buddy - buddy when he's talking face to face with Burke. Nothing like a little star power to dazzle him.

Really wish they had an ebook version of this. I'm interested to read all the stories but I don't want to fork over > $100 for this thing.

GREAT little interview...

I enjoyed that, thanks for posting!

Burke is a quote machine.  Very entertaining.  Has made some excellent trades too.  Lots to like.

Now it's time for results.

The next month before the deadline will be the acid test.  What moves will he make to ensure that the team claws it's way into the playoffs?  That's the minimal achievement in order for Burke to continue to get the adulation he craves.

The team is so close to making the playoffs, that I can see Burke TRYING to make some transactions  to strengthen the team because the other teams in the East will be trying to do the same thing.  I am also aware that Burke will not mortgage the farm or do something stupid that will jeopardize the team in the long term.

I will not fault Burke for not making a trade that is detrimental to the team, just for the sake of making the playoffs this season, then falling off seasons after that.  I will also not fault him for not taking on a contract that is too rich or idiotic for the organization (think Yashin and Kovalchuk).

It's going to be very difficult to make a big impact move.  Either you try and move a bunch of assets to acquire a big name player, which most of us agree Burke won't try to do, or you tinker with smaller trades to hopefully land a guy that provides you that extra push.  If we can someone land another Lupul type, someone who isn't playing up to their potential due to whatever reason, but then manages to find another gear here, then that's great.  Finding a guy like that is easier said then done.  So many teams competing for players at the deadline too, so trades get out of hand and people "lose their heads" as Burke likes to say.  I'm not envious of position.

There will be teams who will need to unload salaries due to economics or other reasons.  Other teams will need to acquire salaries to stay above the cap floor, or players if that team needs a certain type of player (d-man, forward).  There will also be teams who are rebuilding and will want to acquire prospects or draft picks.  Finally, there will be teams who will want to strengthen themselves to make a playoff run.

There will be no shortage of reasons as to why teams will be making trades, and no shortage of potential trade partners for Burke.  Burke does have some assets on the Marlies to play with.  He also has a glut of d-men, so the potential for Burke to make a trade or 2 is there, but as you said, it is easier said than done to acquire players that will be able to help the team into the playoffs.

Somethin' brewin'....

Don't expect to see Brian Burke out having a brew with Don Cherry anytime soon. The general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs is said to be seriously teed off with the often polarizing television personality.

According to QMI Agency, an insider source claims Burke is fed up with Cherry slamming his team, and head coach in particular. So much so, the GM is allegedly thinking about taking his complaint to the media heavyweight's employers at the CBC. Cherry recently chastised Ron Wilson for not applauding the troops during an Armed Forced appreciation game.

When asked if the report of a potential complaint was true, Burke responded that this wasn't the appropriate time to discuss the issue.
