The "Mr. T" Man of the Match Thread, 2014-15 Edition

Gardiner
HM Panik

Honestly a tough game to pick from. The Leafs top line played a ton but were absolutely pummeled in the possession game all night, and they didn't exactly produce either. Bernier was so-so.

Too  be honest if you look  the first line had the majority of the shots. Possession is one thing. But if all you are doing is sticking to the outside and not shooting the puck. It is all for not.

That's not how possession is defined by CF%. The top-line was grossly outshot when they were on the ice, all the other lines were not.

That's also not really true either.  JVR-Bozak-Kessel had 7 shots out of the Leafs 27 shots.  They played more than 40% of the game.  So they put up 25% of the Leafs shots with 40% of the team's ice-time.

I'll go Bozak / Gards.

Santorelli slips ahead of Kessel & Clarkson in Times Voted (Kadri leads in this with Bernier 2nd).  Don't quite know what to make of that.

And Percy still leads all defensemen in Points.  I do know what to make of that....

I think he's taken that 'Mike Brown' award Nik was talking about earlier this season.

Not fair to Santo, he's miles better than Brown.  He scores, for example, hustles and hits just as much, and contributes most every game, not just winning accolades by default in losses like Mike.  In every category except Stache, Santorelli has been better.

I'm as big of a Santo fan as anyone around here, I wasn't dissing him. He's obviously a much better player than Mike Brown. But I mean take the last game for example, Santorelli won the MOTM in a game where nobody was really deserving of it. And he's only won the MOTM in losses, so that probably says something too. He's just the type of player who posters feel good voting for when they can't really think of someone to vote for. Not a bad thing. Just explaining why he's so high up there.

No doubt that's at least partly true.  But speaking for myself anyway, I have voted for him several times in games when others could have gotten my vote too.

And just a word about "games where nobody deserves it."  My view of this thread is that in every game, Leafs players' performance differs, and can be ranked.  Even in games where "nobody is any good," some players play better than others.  That's why I argued against a "none deserving" vote when somebody suggested it a few seasons ago.  I think allowing something like that would be a mistake.  Then the thread just devolves into a lovefest, not an analysis (such as it admittedly is).  [Not that you were suggesting this, I just wanted to comment on it.]

Just checked to see who won in those BUF/NAS blowout games, and of course Santo won them both with a total of 4 votes between both games. So again just showing that his totals are a little inflated because of that. Still a great player for the team.

And I agree that I wouldn't necessarily want a "nobody" vote for those games, it's nice to have a definite winner for every game. But when you're trying to analyse these totals I do think the "quality" of a MOTM win/vote should be somewhat considered.

Agreed, and that's why a MotM in a loss is worth one less point.  Maybe it should be even less?  I'm always open to tweaking the system.  None of this is scientific obviously, but I do think anyone looking at the results at the end of the season ought to get a fair idea of who we fans thought were the best players of the campaign.

Nah, the system's fine. You can easily see where the points come from too anyway to see if a player got most of his from losses. No reason to make this all that complicated.
