The Official 2012 MLB Thread

Hot diggity, Matt Cain just pitched what might be the best game I've ever seen. Perfect game, 14 strike outs, maybe a handful of guys hit the ball hard.

Perfect games and no hitters we're a lot cooler when they were only happening once every 5 years or so.

The longest gap between no-hitters was between August 1941 and April 1944. So if you, as a crotchety old timer, think that no-hitters were cooler during WW2 when the better ballplayers were in the service, fair goes.

Climbing Mt. Everest is cool too, but since everyone and their grandmother is doing it these days, it's kind of lost a bit of its lustre.

The Olympics probably wouldn't be as big a spectacle as they are if they happened every two years instead of every four.

In conclusion, a perfect game is a very impressive individual feat, but it's kind of old news. So, congratulations to Matt Cain for throwing the first perfect game since April 21, 2012.

Sincerely,

Crotchety old timer.

It's not an unfair point. It doesn't diminish the accomplishment but it will lessen public reaction. I think that was evident by the reaction to Humber's game earlier in the year.

The thing that should draw a reaction isn't that it was a perfect game, it's that it very well may be the greatest game ever pitched. Goalies have shutouts just about every day but people would still take note if someone did it with 75 saves.

Verlander is really sucking at the all-star game. Barring some sort of miracle, the American League entry in the world series can thank him for pretty much singlehandedly costing them home field advantage. 5-0 NL after half an inning.

On the upside, the Rangers/Yankees have a good offense and make up 98% of the AL roster.  Seriously 6/9 starting offensive players and another 6 reserves/pitchers.

There are 7 Rangers on the roster.

Apparently the Yanks have acquired Ichiro?  :o ... I'm not seeing anything firm yet though.

Edit: Could be false (apologies if so.)

'tis true;
