The Official Complaint Thread!

Anyone deal with a debt collection agency before?  The Mrs. just received a notice from EOS Canada about a "final notice" about paying off a debt (we assume it's part of her OSAP student loan).  There are a couple issues though:

1) this is actually the first letter she's received, probably because they were being mailed to the wrong address.  She only got this letter when she went to visit her old roommates last week.

2) she is willing to pay off the debt in full (in between savings and taking out a bank loan), however, we've heard horror stories of EOS/Nordon continue to harass for money even after debt is paid, and also continued negative impacts on credit ratings.

Is the a proper way to pay off the debt so that it's closed forever?  Should the money be sent via a lawyer so it's "certified?"  Should the money be paid to OSAP directly, or through the collection agency?

How many years has it been since loan was supposed to be repaid?

I'm not 100% sure - although it sounds like they've been garnishing her tax returns, I don't think she's actually made a payment at all since she convocated.  It was sort of out of mind for her, because they weren't contacting her - turns out, they were trying to, just to the wrong address.

somebody smashed my front bumper in a parking lot yesterday... the whole this is hanging off... just hit and run. WTF is wrong with people. You have insurance, leave a freaking note. Now I have to claim it as if it was my fault.

Everyday I'm getting more and more fed up with having a car in this city. Something has to be done with driver education, it gets worse each passing year.

Just bought the car in October too.. awesome.

Honestly, I'm tired of people acting like 16 year olds are the problem with driving.  Teenagers are reckless drivers, but adults do some unbelievably outrageous stuff.

Last week I was driving on the 401 in the left lane and I got driven into the ditch because the guy decided he wanted into my lane while we were parallel.  I honked to warn him of what he was doing.  I slammed on my breaks and ended up fishtailing on to the shoulder.  The second he got ahead of me he raced off to avoid getting into trouble.  Luckily everyone in the car with me was fine and there was technically no damage to my car but I was absolutely dumbfounded.

The worst thing is absolutely nothing can be done about it even though I had his licence plate.

I honestly think half the drivers over 30 would fail a driving test if they had to re-do it.

Whitby has some of the worst drivers I've ever seen. Everyone is overly aggressive and constantly speeding. Scarborough was bad enough, but it was easier because, even though the drivers were terrible, they were cautious. Here it's just hold on for dear life because you never know when some clown is going to fly up behind you or cut you off....or drive the wrong way down the street. Don't even think about driving when the rush hour crowds are leaving the GO station. Talk about open season.

I didn't mean to imply that it was teenagers. I meant driver education as a whole - which you bring up with re-testing - that's something I believe should be mandatory - you should have to be re-tested every 5 years or so.

There also seems to be this new sense of entitlement drivers seem to have now on the roads - just pure douchebaggery out there. Nobody understands how left lanes work, how freaking headlights work for christ sakes! I don't know how many times I've seen cars on the highway with no lights on at night - and I look in the cabin and it's pitch black in there - how in the hell can you drive without seeing ANY of your instrumentation in the car?

In my town, the biggest problem is running red lights. After a light turns red, usually two more cars will drive through the red before or as the opposite light turns green. It's especially bad for advanced left-hand turns. On-going traffic has to wait for at least three or even four more cars to just draft the turning cars ahead of them.

It's dangerous to stop on an amber light here because everyone expects you to blow through the amber and first couple of seconds of the red.

Yeah, that happens a lot.  I understand the left turns for 1 or 2 cars that are in the intersection already, but cars going straight just plow through right up to the light is officially red.

And Joe, I wasn't implying that you were referring to teens.  I agree entirely.  I think we need to have ALL drivers retested every once and a while.  Whether that is an online test or an in-car assessment.

NO.  There is only 1 car allowed in the intersection to turn left.  There's no reason for 2-3 cars to be in there, and for the 4th car to follow through the red.

I swear, I could write a book about all the bull**** that happens on the road... I've debated getting a dashcam to post videos on the web and publicly shame people...

There's actually a thread dedicated to that on RFD.

Oh, believe me, I agree.  But I'd rather that second car that already pushes itself into the intersection actually go through the intersection, rather than the jerks who pull into the intersection, don't get through the light, and block an entire lane of traffic until they get the next advanced green.

OMFG, here's a comment from someone:

sometimes when you're going fast in snow weather its better to RUN a red then to stop ... you have to adopt to the weather conditions ... whats the point on pulling breaks and sliding across the street even worse then just running a red

ARE YOU ******* KIDDING ME?  People actually think this way?  The concept of "drive according to weather conditions" does NOT mean 'drive thru red lights when it's too slippery to stop'.  IT MEANS SLOW THE **** DOWN, *******!

If I ever lose my job, I'm going to become a traffic cop.  I'll be the most anal traffic cop ever.  People will know me, and people will hate me.

Retesting drivers is a good start, but the whole driver licensing system needs to be overhauled. The in car portion of the test should be much harder than it is. Here in NL, bad drivers go "around the bay" to be tested in a small town where there is only one lane in either direction and one stop sign. You are then a fully licensed driver and will never be tested again.

In Finland for example, you have to drive in wet conditions, perform emergency maneuvers, and actually prove that you can handle a vehicle before getting a license.

I got rear ended on my way to work today. Lovely.

I absolutely agree on being re-tested. If I'm not mistaken, drivers licenses (in Ontario anyway) expire every 5 years. There should be a road test before you can renew your license.

Honestly, I think a road test is inadequate.  It's too easy to fake being a good driver for a, what, 30 minute(?) road test.  It should be at least a week long test (or 5-7 days worth of road testing, not necessarily all in 1 week).
